That is sad, it is in a rattler with a CAC sticker. Do I send it in to PCGS for restoration? Is it a grade guarantee matter? Never done this before. Thanks!

Bummer on the holder. PCGS can review the coin. You never know it might be an upgrade :)

That would be nice since it is a 1955 DDO :)

Now that you've announced it, can we see the obverse?

Sure, PCGS can get that off easily. Bummer about the rattler and CAC sticker. Shoot pix beforehand and it will resticker automatically.

It would be on your nickel (so to speak). PCGS's guarantee no longer covers PVC or verdigris.

OTOH, you can save yourself conservation fees with Verdi-Care. The job is trivial. Get it here: wizardcoinsupply.com/products/verdi-care.html

Of course you lose the grade guarantee if you conserve it yourself. But hey, maybe it will upgrade?

I would guess that most folks wouldn't sweat it. The spot is very tiny and doesn't look terribly active.

Here's what very active verdigris looks like, and how Verdi-Care removed it. Often, like this case, the surface underneath will be bright red, as verdigris is damaging.

Looks like there might be another spot taking shape on the S

Why makes you think the Verdi-Care is responsible for the bright red? Isn't that what you would expect to find under the contamination once you remove it?

Did I say that wrong? I agree.

you are able to take good photos of the whole coin

the up close and personal shots seem to be at an angle.

if you can take an up close and personal shot straight on, show some adjacent details for future photo alignment, and able to white balance each shot -- perhaps you could take a photo every two weeks or 4 weeks to see if it is growing or changing colors.

from the first photo, the blue in it seems excessive. it would be interesting to see what it looks like with proper white balance.

The issue I have at present is that I still have the right to return this item, but that right will end shortly. The images used to sell the item made it impossible to determine that here was any verdigris on the coin and it was not mentioned in the auction description. I am assuming the coin had none when it was graded, and I assume it would not CAC with the verdigris as is, but I am not sure.

If I wait to see if the problem is active or not, I will be forced to keep the coin and then potentially have to send it in, lose the holder, lose the sticker and end up with a coin that may change grade negatively (or positively). I think the best choice is to return the coin and that is what I have initiated. It is in a MS63BN rattler if anybody was wondering about the grade. Thanks for the feedback!

Unless you got the coin at a bargain basement price, I'd return it. This is the problem buying a coin from an image. As good as the image may be, it may leave something out. Have seen this sort of thing too many times.
