1880/79-CC rev '78 Morgan PCGS MS-63 Regency holder

Gauging interest. I have an 1880/79-CC rev '78 Morgan in a PCGS Regency holder. I don't know what the value is being in a Regency holder. The coin alone is worth around $700 and I know the holder adds value. I'd like to sell it. Any offers?

As an owner of a Regency holdered U.S. type coin, I try to follow input from others who have an interest in this area. I had my Regency holdered 1878 Proof 65 Shield nickel on display at a show last weekend, and several dealers were pressuring me for a price on it, even though I had it labeled For Display Only. One of the dealers kept coming back to my table, and eventually admitted that he needed the denomination to complete his Regency holder collection of U.S. denominations. Although I declined to sell my coin, he freely offered that the Regency holder has the potential for $2K without any consideration for the coin. I'm not so sure that is the real market, as I obtained my Shield 5¢ from a forum member for a much lesser premium on the holder. Your mileage may vary.
There was an 1887/6-P Morgan in Regency MS-63 that sold on eBay in the past 12 months for about $700 over Greysheet bid, if that is of any help.

I sold my Regency holdered coin at GreatCollections.

    greatcollections.com/Coin/245507/1890-CC-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-Tailbar-PCGS-MS-62-CAC-PCGS-Green-Regency-Holder

    It did very well :)

They have an option to send your coin out to CAC for review.
Ian Russell (president of GC) also promoted the coin on their main page and emails.
Give Ian a call, he is great to work with.

    Replied!

  • Here's a reverse pic as requested. Also, I don't know if it matters or not, but there is no carry bag. I'm not sure if the American collector submissions came with a carry bag or not. Maybe someone can enlighten me! I know the Danny Kaye Israeli coins had a bag and cert.

That would be a hum-dinger to have! Way outta my league I am guessing. One of these days...

    Love the Regency Holdered slabs....

Is the premium strictly for the slab?? Or has the coin gained in value that much?? Cheers, RickO

I think both. Regency holders are hot, combined with a very desirable Top 100 vam 4 CC Morgan in PQ condition for the grade! Win Win!

I was wondering, since I have that 80/79 in my collection...have had it for 20 years and paid considerably less at the time. Cheers, RickO

The vam 4 has been very popular in a GSA holder lately where this grade would bring $750-$850.

geez, I remember many quite vocally touting here for many years "buy the coin, not the holder". Seems times and opinions have changed.

The Danny Kaye's came in a velvet box with his picture, a brass label, the olive wood box the coin originally came in, the velvet bag and a DVD of a Danny Kaye movie

  • Thank you everyone for your comments, suggestions, advice, and PM's! I have decided to consign the coin with Greatcollections.com and it should be listed within the next 2-3 weeks! This has been a real learning experience for me and as a new member here on the forum I am humbled by the amount of help and interest I have seen from you all! I will update the thread once I know when it is listed with GC! Thanks again!

I will be watching GC out of pure curiosity...and to see if I was even in the state that the ball park was in.

I am guessing that CAC did not like it? Ian is pretty good about sending candidate coins to JA for his approval.

Didn't send it to CAC. I didn't think that having a sticker on the holder was good for it's originality! It also gives the winning bidder the opportunity to send it in if he/she likes.

My bid was tops for a couple of hours...I needed tires for my Avalanche more.

Lol! But tires won't give you the pleasure that a rare coin does! ;)

  • Only 7 days left on the auction!

  • Yea IDK where he got 5K from! I wish! Lol! Anyway, it was a real learning experience for me and I'm happy with the outcome. I was hoping for a little more action on the last day, it seemed to flatline for about a week and then just a couple bumps and that was it!

I want to thank everyone here who helped me! I really didn't know what I had and have never consigned any of my coins for auction. Now that I'm warmed up I'll be submitting some key date Lincoln cents in mid circulated grades with GC. They should be available on-line mid January! I'll post a separate thread when they come available!

    Again, thanks to you all!

Try opening the correct link. The goofy $4,750 price was for the PCGS -62 1890-CC Tailbar. Some VAM Registry head case or two just had to have that.
    The 1880-CC Reverse of 1878 PCGS MS63 Regency brought $1,925.00 all in. ($1,750 + 10% BF)
I had privately estimated $1500 for the OP - the coin is PQ for the grade, so no huge surprise that it went 16% higher.
