to make a speculative investment on a single US coin purchase, which one would you buy? Just like a hedge fund, you'll get a 2% management fee (one-time $200 fee if you spent exactly $10K) and a 20% performance fee on any profits you make.

still trying to think of any nice pre-1800 type in Au that 10K would buy
A Fathead $5
It's too small an amount for a proper investment in US coins. Maybe a world coin...
Classic head large cent, ideally 1811
something rare and thinly traded like the 1842 $5 small or large letters which I long been a proponent of. Thinly traded being key to allow for bigger spreads. I love early gold but it is quite frequently traded making it difficult to make extra normal profits.
Latin American Collection
Sorry, trick question, right now anything in numismatics as an investment is a gamble, and most of the time, unless you can get dealer pricing, it is a long way to turning a profit. I would simply instead put it in a SP500 index fund instead if investment is what one wants. Now if it were for purely collecting sake with long-term holding (at least 15 years), I would say a Classic Head half eagle with a C or D mint mark - best grade and a CAC bean, that one can buy for $10K. And if anyone has one for sale, please PM me.
Best, SH
I'd probably look for an original civil war dated gold coin. But then again I might look for a neat Colonial. Still....I might want to seek out a neat pattern coin. Or even an error. I really used to like dmpl morgan dollars and might rekindle some consideration in that direction.:)

Then again I could use a vacation and 10K would be a decent week in NYC so........gotta do what makes you happy but if you're married you could bring your better half and while 10K won't get far in NYC for a week, you could just explore and have lots of memorable fun .......

I'm sorry, but I'd spread my risk across 10 coins if I had to make a numismatic investment. Liquidity is a prime reason.

Hoard the keys.
You guys are ignoring the point of this exercise: I you had to buy ONE coin for about $10,000, what would it be?
I would buy gold coins close to melt: Would pick among MS63-64 Saints, AU58-MS63 Libs, MS 69 AGE, AGB. Probably about 6 coins, shop around. Or perhaps graded World Gold - just whatever I thought was nice, fairly close to melt, even mod commem slabbed gold. I would buy everything on ebay and put them in my store. I bought two nice NGC coins at slightly less than 50% MV last nite. A MS69 2014 HOF Dollar and 1953-D MS64FL FH. Seems like getting easier buy nice coins on the bay at 50-60% MV.
As far as putting that in just one coin - not for me - love to bulk up. I keep thinking a 20 coin slab box full of five .1867 AGW World Gold Coins then some USA Numismatics, Morgan / Peace Dollars, and Classic Commems.
If just one coin -PCGS MS65 $10 Indian one of the 7 or so dates around this amount, say 1915.
Correction - meant $5 Indian above.

It would be a gold coin..... great strike and likely a branch mint... Cheers, RickO
1797 silver dollar, but it would be primarily for my type set, with investment potential secondary (but not disregarded)
