I'd imagine PCGS would call it a VF35, but the images make me think it has been spiffed up quite a bit first.

probably called xf40. the coin has been mishandled if the photo is truly representative of the actual look.

Thanks for the comments... much appreciated.

In what way do you believe it was mishandled?

i am just saying that it doesn't look right in the photo. i don't know if it's been mishandled or not. it's hard to tell without seeing it in hand. is 40 the grade?

Oh wow sorry, didn't see your post, I'm still pretty new. @cameron12x it is quite nice though, any old gold is good in my book.

I like it. Didn't get to guess before the grade was posted, but I was thinking XF40.

I would have said XF40 as well.

Color is off on the coin or the picture. That mustard yellow look is not typical for an unboinked coin.

    XF40 Camp
Color looks "off", but could be the pics.
Typical weak strike in hair above the ear.

Late to the game... would have said 40..... but any old gold is nice IMO.... Cheers, RickO

Forgot to say it's a Plain 4...if I had to guess again I would have said XF40...I use that little curl to the left of the ear on the obverse as my guide....if it's worn flat then it's a 35...yours has some detail...but not as much as I would expect from a 45...

Pictures look like they come from David Lawrence...for such a big outfit they should hire Tom or Lance to take better photos...all their gold coins come in that mustard yellow and look flat...but I know they are much nicer in hand because I have bought and sold with them...nice people...quality coins...

The coin is in a PCGS holder??

I was thinking AU; have been amazed at how these get graded higher than I would expect.

Yes, PCGS holder. Will have it in hand on Saturday. And yes, from David Lawrence.

Is the lighting right in the photo? Looks "different" than it should. What do I know? :)

  • stevebensteveben Posts: 4,638 ✭✭✭✭✭

post some more photos when you get, if possible. congrats!

Congrats on the new pick up. Very underrated series IMO
  • jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭✭✭

I love the Classic Heads but not sure how the series is underrated....plenty of nice inventory to go around...163 1834s with CAC approval including 35 in AU 58....the P-dates come well struck...

jwitten -- now that's a good photo...just so surprising how a big player like David Lawrence can't get good pics...hope Cameron12x takes one with his phone so we can compare...LOL

I believe the issue with DLRC is the velocity of sales and quick inventory turnover that they require in their business model.
