Would this be considered a "weak strike" or "wear"?

I seen this Liberty Nickel and was intrigued by the toning pattern and I have difficulty distinguishing between weak strike and wear.

I just wanted to hear what the CU Forum Members have to say.

Weak strike it appears, but possibly both?

Looks like it was weakly struck.

Either way; I wouldn't pay more than AU 58 money for it, if that answers your question.

I would call it a weak strike. Interesting die cracks, too.

More wear than weak. AU55 would be my guess.

My greater concern would be the area at 7 o'clock rim on the obverse. Is this damage and if not why the discoloration and flattening of the rim?

ANACS called it MS62 in an older blue holder. What do you think PCGS would say?

These coins are as common as dirt and come well struck. This coin is worn and has funky color. Pass. You can get a nice no problem coin in MS 66 in a PC holder for $300; probably 1/2 of that for an MS 65.

Yes they are common and inexpensive in most grades. However a higher grade would defeat the purpose of an "Everyman Set" entry.

I see only strike issues....along with full luster, and no wear.

If in doubt, check out the flat part of the rims. They look unworn, rough, and with the same toning. Any worn coin will also show wear on the rims. And that means the luster disappears and they begin to look smooth rather than "rough."

Ignore the weakest parts of the coin and look for wear on the other half that is sharply struck, like the upper half of head/hair, right side wreath, the V, etc. I don't know what these are going for right but I'd pick this up for MS63/64 money. Oops, just saw the post stating ANACS graded in MS62. If it's an older holder, it's likely 63/64 today. PCGS could no grade it due to questionable color. Doesn't seem to be worth enough to waste $30 grading it again. If the luster is not quite sharp enough, it could 62 again or AT. I'm a buyer of all better date "AU" Lib nickels that look like this one.
