Poll - What is the highest value you have sold a coin on eBay for?

Everyone complains about eBay, but actually they have the lowest fees for sellers.

With a store you pay 6% (plus PP fees) but it is capped at $250 maximum. So if you sell a $10,000 coin the fee is only 2.5%

It really is a bargain considering the number of eyes eBay provides.

Use the amount in the poll as a range with the amount listed being the top of the range. So if you sold a $15,000 coin select $20,000

Ebay is a great deal for sellers. I buy many items off ebay many non numismatic and they all add up in getting my ebay bucks.

There is no juice on ebay auctions one wins either. Ebay is a super place to buy and sell. On ebay one has control on what they list their material for whether BIN, BIN / make offer, or auction (and even then control of opening bid).

The only thing I see about not being able to use ebay bucks for coins is on Bullion.

Ya, that's what the rules SAY, but I had a coupon the other day that said the same thing, and it would not let me use it on a coin. I called and asked about it, and they said they were changing it to all coins and paper money category. I guess we will know for sure when they next bucks are delivered.

Most dealers do a tremendous amount of low value items, and only a few high value ones. Once you start going over $2K interest declines markedly. Of course if you list bargains you will get lots of interest.

    I sold 100 PCGS moderns for $9k around 2006.
Even though he had to sign for the box, I was worried he'd say it was filled with phone books.

It went fine, but back in those days buyers were pretty much on their own anyway.

I'd be worried more today with a buyer doing a chargeback and PayPal giving them their money back.

Yup ..As a seller, paranoia can lead to a hole in your pocket. 99.99% of the time, if you abide by the conditions implemented by either eBay or PayPal along with using common sense, your sale will go through w/o a hitch.

You can't spend ebay bucks on coins any longer?

    Ah, the good old days...
I've sold a few coins in the past in the $5-$7k range. I remember an 1875 Tr $ in MS63, a 1878-CC Tr $ in AU, an XF 1893-S dollar, a gold 8 Escudos treasure cob, and a few more with specifics that presently escape me.

Today, I wouldn't chance it. I wouldn't list anything over a few hundred dollars. My new motto adopted from reading the feepay forums is "don't list anything you can't afford to have stolen because it will happen to you."

I voted $500 but it was closer to $400 IIRC. Most of what I've sold on ebay was $50 to $150.

Bought a 1799 Bust dollar for $4,500.00, enjoyed it for a while then sold it on Ebay for $4,000. Buy high, sell low, that's the way I roll.

For those in the know selling a coin on ebay that has a value of over $20.000 are fooling themselves.

Heritage may pay over 100% of the hammer price. Ebay will never pay you more that the hammer price.

I've sold a few coins in the $10,000 to $25,000 range on eBay and selling those on eBay is BY FAR the cheapest place to sell those when looking at the total fees.

Let's say we're talking about a coin worth $20,000 and that is most the buyer is willing to pay.

Let's say you're a special dealer who does tons of business with Heritage and they're willing to give you 105% of the hammer price... or even 108%... heck, let's say they really want your business and they love this coin and they'll pay 110% to you!!!

With a 17.5% buyer's premium, the bidder will bid a max of about $17,000 and then pay Heritage $19,975 after the buyer's premium... round up to the $20k after you add shipping. As a consignor getting 110% of the hammer, you'll net $18,700 on the sale and Heritage makes roughly $1,300.

That same $20,000 coin sells on eBay by a top rated seller with a store and the buyer will actually bid $20,000 because there is no buyer's premium. The total final value fees cap out at $250. This gets reduced to $200 if the seller is a top rated seller getting a 20% final value fee discount. If the buyer pays via PayPal, the PayPal charge will be $580.30. After paying shipping costs, the eBay seller is left with around $19,200 after all fees... $500 more than if they had a sweetheart deal via Heritage.

Even better, in my experience most buyers of five-figure coins on eBay do not want to pay via PayPal but instead will contact me to do a wire transfer. In that case, you can eliminate the PayPal fees and assuming your bank charges very little to receive a wire, the total fees of selling a $20k coin on eBay are only about 1%!!!!

No auction house comes close to that no matter what deal you have with them. Of course, on eBay you do all the work, but that has benefits too as you control the write up, the photos, etc.

  • 7k, I think

The $250 cap is pretty incredible if you are able to sell very expensive coins on eBay
