Thanx Kevin.
I'm meeting with the electrician tomorrow - I'm curious to see if all the lights I want are now LED vs halogen.
Will show progress as I go.
The big problem is moving stuff out of the way to get the painting and electrical work done.
Go with LED if you can. We did it for our entire basement, and while it is more expensive than haologen it will save you $$ on your electric bill, looks better, and you don't have to switch them out except for every 18-22 years Your place looks great - nice job.
Ya, cost with LEDs should no longer be an issue. There are different light waves, so knowing which is best may take some research. I would think the farther you get to the blue side of the spectrum, the better that would be for protection from fading. There should be some available research on this.
CURRENT PROJECTS IN WORK: To be honest, no direction, but... 1966-69 Topps EX+ 1975 minis NrMt Kelloggs PSA 9 All Topps Heritage-Master Sets
Would like to add some updates - clearing and preparing for the painting and lighting has been more work than I thought.
I've moved a few things more than twice!
Cataloging my games is labor intense since every game has to be put on an inventory sheet - each pile needs to be individually done and numbered to find a particular game without taking hours .
Even after removing a bunch of stuff, the room is still filled with "junk":
What was once my side of the closet - now looks like a storage bin for a card shop:
Altho it felt like I was shoveling sand into the wind, the back room is ready for the pros to come in:
I'm removing the fan/light - it takes up too much aerial space - the eye tends to go there - did it in the living room and we really liked it.
The left wall will have a display cabinet that I have never used along with bracket shelves flanking both sides - they'll be at a 45 degree angle for the display of board games - what else?
The wall on the back next to the window will have a computer and my music stuff - I decided that's where I'll practice guitar and stuff.
The electrician is coming on Wed or Thur - will show the progress - lighting with digital dimmers works really nice - I like the LEDs since the halogens I have create heat and do sometimes shut down for a bit when left on - on hi.
The front room is purely a storage area at this point - looking forward to setting up stuff for display:
I'll take a new pic - there's way more stuff in there now!
Well, that's my update - as I go along, I'll let ya all know what I liked and didn't.
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Mike - sweet setup. If you find that you run out of space let me know and we can take some 70's unopened stuff off your hands along with HOF high grade rookies. It is the least we could do to help you out
I had a copy of the 25th anniversary SCD in hand from the fall of 1998.
Came to this comment which I thought was pretty interesting.
I have a theory that people become obsessive about their collecting when their "real" lives cease to offer adequate rewards. Their ambition, their pride, their belief in themselves get channeled into what should otherwise be an innocent recreation. Jeff Mortimer, SCD columnist 1975
Besides all the hobby stuff - I've spend most of the winter playing general contractor - or should I say baby sitter to a bunch of subs - some good, some not so good.
We started out with an 80s/90s looking kitchen:
and I believe made it into something a bit more contemporary:
Awesome work Mike! I've spent much of the last two years renovating a small cabin, and now I'm moving to a new home in need of a major renovation. I'll be staying busy for a while. Saddest part was taking down my sports room in the existing house. I built the individual shelves, the racing suit display case and the Gwynn "locker". I also did all the framing (bought an industrial mat cutter and taught myself). Probably a few hundred hours' work. No prior training. Just You Tube videos and guesswork. Hah. Here are some photos.

That is truly amazing what you have done there, and the way it is organized and arranged with pictures and descriptions is a great touch. Hard to imagine a better one out there. Are the boxes full or are they empty display boxes. I have a run of boxes from 1967-1976 and was thinking of doing a similar display with packs and boxes. Thank you for sharing.
Esquiresports - The box/pack display is (rather, was) awesome. I hope you are able to replicate it in your new house.
Mine was designed with the intent of keeping stuff away from the rugrats as it doubles as their playroom.
Forgive the wall blotches above the 500 Homerun bat (woefully not updated). The original intent was to put the UD 500 HR POH cards in a shadow box above it. Instead, my wife put velcro on the back of cardholders and attached them directly to the wall. Once UD lost the MLB license, I gave up and sold them. I just have never gotten around to repainting the part of the wall that got damaged from the removal.
I have enjoyed following this and seeing all the pictures! Looks great and a number of great displays. Makes me want to push for a bigger ManCave but my "supervisor" would never sign off....
I'm a big fan of the statues - I have an incomplete 60s Hartland grouping; great auto pics in background; do I see Mike Schmidt in the back?
Thanx for sharing!
You are welcome and thank you for sharing your project.
There is a wide hall (about 5 ft across) and 12 feet long when you turn left at the bottom of the stairs. The stair side has the Gretzky, Flyers and Parent stuff. The other side has a keyboard, mirror, some autographed sticks (not seen), doors to the storage and the Lindbergh jersey and autos. It opens out to a large playroom.
The one wall and corner has 500 HR stuff, (balls, 8 x 10's, Greatest Moments, Gartlan, Kenner, McFarlane and 25th Hartland figures - including Schmidt) the signed bat and a Jim Thome hat. Then there is a bookcase/entertainment center with the 1980 WS ball and black bat (from Dot & Lou, who won it from the Halper auction) in the corner. The other wall then has some 8 x 10's, balls, figures and a signed Ron Lewis Mike Schmidt print (not seen), then a bunch of Mike Schmidt stuff (Hall of Fame induction stuff framed, induction bat, signed gamer, Cooperstown Bat Co. and a 500 HR display with a signed ticket, Classic card and Gateway cachet).

My wiffle ball box is from 1977. All Thurman Munson's on them as well. Regulation size. Wouldn't yours be from the 70's too because of the discs ? Or did they produce discs in the 80s as well ?
You're probably correct. I was erring on the safe side - should've said late 70s - maybe being produced in 1980ish also?
The lights are in - they're a combo of eyeball and some pucks - the center self area a puck with glass shelves. They're controlled by 2 digital dimmers - the final orientation of the lights to be determined after being used.
The reason why the lights are suspended? I'm gonna bag them as protection from the painters.
Also, if you notice - the ceiling fan is gone - it's made the room look way larger IMO.
I have to give georgebailey credit for what I'm doing on the left side.
I've decided to put a 10 ft. self 27 inches from the ceiling for the display of larger boards and bagatelle (pinball) games.
Called the carpenter to come in when back from Dallas - I did a cardboard mock up to see what width shelf I could get away with - so far I'm happy at 5.5 inches.
Mike-- if you have any extra or duplicative stuff you no longer want and yet hate to throw anything away, send it to Bob unannounced . That's what I do.
Nice job so far Mike ..................and Super Amazing rooms all the rest of you guys have posted so far on your Man Caves ! Wish I had the room to do something like that but I don't think my wife would let me do it anyway I will just have to settle for my small office !

As I work on sanding the built in shelves, I started on a preliminary plan for the other wall.
The top shelf and 4 smaller will be mounted like a fireplace mantle with crown molding under the shelf.
I chose this design to keep the shelves from "eating" the wall.
Not sure if I mentioned, but also, when I look at the photos, I notice that the 2 closet doors and the window w/blinds will attract the eye.
Fix? I decided to have the closet doors and trim painted the same color as the wall; instead of blinds - I want a simple single shutter - again - painted the color of the walls.
We'll just have to "see" how this works out?
Note: the lines connecting the 2 1/2' shelves are "not" part of the design - I didn't get around to erasing them.
The shelves on this side will be solely for the display of board games and bagatelles.
Someone asked me why didn't I make all of them adjustable?
I was probably trying to keep it simple - and I "may" regret it?
Another way to go here would've been to have a cabinet company design, order and install shelves of my color - not sure what that would've cost - my instinct is more.

Hi everyone
Here's a dry run with the pedestal I had made - I'll probably paint it flat black - not sure which coin ops will wind up on it?
Not sure how it will look when finished - since it was thrown in with the other work - I won't cry if I don't use it.
Does anyone else have a problem with too much junk to store? I've been collecting for 30 years - never sell anything - it's time to have a real plan.
Mike love it! Lots of details on the lighting plan please. My project got delayed by the honey do list. Hoping to begin soon. Since I'll be doing it all myself lighting is the one thing I'm the most concerned over. Keep the updates coming.

Mike, I'm guessing you ate out a lot over the winter? Looks great! Sorry you had some bad subs. I don't know why there are so many around.

I wonder how many people here know who Dot & Lou are?
I met Lou at the National in Chicago - have been buying from them for years - SCD days.
I trust anything he says about a Hartland.
Not sure of the date - probably early 80s? Yes - they're soft balls - thus easier to pick up I'm guessing.
I still like them and they'll make a nice display. Thanx for asking.
