SF Gold NEWP

mvs7mvs7 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭✭✭
NEWP from Doug Winter. The 1856-S gold dollar is notable because it is the only type two gold dollar produced at San Francisco and also because it was the only type two gold dollar produced in 1856, with Philadelphia and Dahlonega having already switched to the type three design. This particular piece has interesting original green-gold color, which is challenging to find for this particular date as processed pieces are much more common. This piece is also the once-thought-rare S/S variety, with the original S clearly visible high and to the right of the second bolder S.

Nice - I'm a big fan of original early San Francisco gold. I looked at a couple of these at the ANA show, but this one is really appealing.

Wow, nice original piece! Where's that been hiding for the past 160 years!

that's a really nice gold dollar. it's struck well (which commands a premium) and retains a lot of detail. the 8 in the date is well defined. nice color too.

Yeah, as mentioned it's one of the best well struck examples I've seen of the date. And great color too.

Great coin! I've always loved this issue and would like to get one someday for the reasons you mention, your example is outstanding

Very nice example! Great color and nice surfaces. WTG.

I really like the type II design, and the '56-S is the one I'd want (though a '55-D would be a joy).

The middle date digits are stronger on the '56 than the '54 and '55. The Mint tweaked the design for 1856 with a shallower Liberty portrait for better metal flow.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. At one point in my uneducated past, maybe five years ago, I had a complete set of the seven S-mint gold dollars in PCGS AU, of which two were nice original pieces. I showed them to Doug Winter at some random Baltimore show and he quickly pointed out the two nice ones (coincidentally both bought from him previously LOL) and told me why the other ones weren't so nice. So began that education! The other five, including the processed 1856-S were sold off and I've been slowly replacing them. With this one, I'm up to five of the seven again. I've looked at dozens of 1856-S's over the past few years, and this is by far the best I've seen in the mid-AU grades in terms of strike, color, and overall appeal.
