1972 DDO with Clip Error

Got ahold of a Dino-Lite and dug this out of the raw coin curiosity box to image. I'm thinking this is a Die 3 DDO? Any added value with the clip? Guess on grade?

Coin looks 64+ RB to me.
The clip should add some value, but you're going to have to find the right guy--one who likes die varieties AND planchet errors.
Might be tough to find that guy. The two camps usually don't play in the same sandbox.
Very nice pics. I agree with your attribution of die #3.

*cough* *ahem*
Other than Fred Weinberg, I don't think you'll find a more "right guy" to comment on this coin than me. Among other things, I actually collect CPG varieties with clips. I currently have two examples of this variety with a clip, though both of mine are AU at best. Yours is the nicest by far that I have seen.
By themselves, the clip and the DDO aren't all that hard to find. 1972 is perhaps the most common date for small curved clips (along with 1944 and 1964-D), and Die #3 is the most common DDO for the date. Together, I feel the coin is worth a modest premium (say 50%) over the value of the variety on a normal planchet. Most of the value is in the DDO, if your coin was simply clipped and not a variety, it would be worth just a couple of bucks.
I would be curious to see what Fred thinks, he usually finds his way to these threads.

than I have, and I agree with you that the 1972 date is
the most common of these combo's......I've seen some
of the lesser '72 DDO's (can't recall all the DDO #'s),
and they always sell pretty fast, as they are a great
'bridge' between Die Varieties and mechanical errors.
This piece posted has a bit larger clip than most........
I don't know what this Die #3 is worth, but the premium
would be at least 50% as Sean says; possibly more.
So some of you may want to know, like ricko, what the 'raw coin box' is and it is a rather mundane 2x2 box that holds all the raw coin purchases and finds that I have made over the years. I'm sure almost all you may have one or more
Sean, mannie gray, and Fred: I appreciate your taking the time to comment especially. I purchased this coin back in July 2012 and records show I paid $21 for it. I really don't know why I bought it at the time, but I always try to purchase something from the B&M shops I visit. I'm pleased I attributed it correctly but, quite honestly, without the clip this coin just wouldn't do much for me. DDO #1 is pretty outstanding, but the other 8 are more blah.
Might just put this one in the pile for an eventual grade, error designation, & TrueView.
Thanks again!!

I think number 4, while a little blah, is worth thousands......

You are correct sir, if it's a decent unc.
I made the mistake many years ago (probably about 1992) of selling a nice brown AU for literally peanuts.
At the time I was unaware of the rarity of this die.
I don't think I was alone in that aspect. I had the coin prominently displayed in my case at several big shows, not even a passing whiff.
Finally got tired of it and blew it out.
Not one of my brighter decisions.
