Anyone collect Weakly Struck coins on purpose?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,741 ✭✭✭✭✭
Awhile back I had a mint state Buffalo nickel in PCGS plastic- graded MS63, I think. 1934 is the date I recall. Super weakly struck. Looked FN15 with luster. I admired that Buffalo as it was so weakly struck, has to appear beautiful (in my eyes).

I now regret selling it and wonder if anyone else has a bit of a passion for ultra-weakly struck- uncirculated coins.

If so, I'd love to see a photo or two of them.
Thanks!

A collecting trend that I hope never develops.

In some series there isn't an option. Show me a collection of fully struck San Francisco Peace dollars. You can find a few here and there, but an entire Mint Series (only 9 coins) of FULLY struck "S" coins would really be special.

I put aside very unusual flatly struck coins. For instance, ran across a completely flat headed PCGS MS63 1924 Saint about 10 years ago. Decided it was worth keeping as I had never seen one like it before or since. No corresponding weakness on the reverse. A very choice original coin otherwise, ogh as I recall.

If someone has a flat headed AGE or ASE that would go nicely with it. Good luck with that.

I have a few Gem Morgans that I am holding onto just because of the strike. Obverse is so weak at the rims that the stars blend into the fields, no separation in ear/hair.

I say to fully appreciate well struck examples, you should know what a weak strike will exhibit. To see both ends of the spectrum side by side is quite something.

Weakly struck 1884-O vs a razor sharp 1884-CC.

If you have a 40-S or 44-S Walker in your collection, then that does answer the question! image

I have an unc 16S buff that's pretty flat. Bought it cheap from my wholesale guy for ~VF money some years ago on a whim.

If you collect coins minted in New Orleans, chances are you are collecting weakly struck coins.
