1820 and 1821 Matron Head cents from my collection

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm in the process of imaging all of my large cents, and I would like to share these two Matron Head cents that photographed well. The 1820 is a common Randall Hoard coin, but I don't think I will ever own another large cent with such detail and freedom of contact marks. It is uncertified and I do not care if/what it would grade. The 1821 is also raw as of this morning when I cracked it out of an NGC AU55 slab. The slab had enough fine scratches on it that I could not really enjoy the coin (or image it). This coin also previously resided in a PCGS AU55 holder, though not while I owned it. I think it is better off out of the slab. Hope you enjoyed seeing these.

Wow! That 1820 is phenomenal. I didn't bother to attribute it, but with those obverse die cracks it must be easily identifiable. What a gorgeous coin.

I'm enjoying looking at your coins! I can say from first hand experience that the 1821 is a tough date that nice.image

Looking at these, no wonder the terminal stage of many collectors' careers ends up with large cents. They are positively gorgeous.

Post all that you would like . . . .

    Your photography skills are great!

I love them both. Thanks for sharing.

Terminal? I must be deceased, then. I collected large cents from 2002-2008 before they got too expensive for my tastes and I "passed on" to collecting other things. RIP, rhedden.

The 1820 is the N-13, the type coin of the date. I don't know why, but every one I've seen is struck up very well. The copper planchets used were also of good quality, unlike the Classic Large Cents, where a problem free Unc. is very hard to find. Of the series, I think they are the easiest to find in all grades, and give the most value for your money.

I used to have one of them. Thanks for sharing, Ron.

    That 1821 is awesome.

Until you have collected that series, you might not appreciate how tough to find an 1821 like that is (high grade, with light brown surfaces).

    They are usually dark turds.

Ditto for 1823/2 and 1823 cents. They are even worse turds that turn up in lower grades!

    Lovely, Ron! Wonderful cents.

Your coin images are not round (the coins appear wider than tall). Intentional?

  • rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
Lazy & intentional. They were photographed at a slight angle to get the lighting right. It would take all of 10 seconds to resize them so they're round. Just pretend you're viewing them at an angle so I don't have to resize them. image

A couple of very nice looking copper pieces.

    Love the 1820.

Great photos, nice 1820, phenomenal 1821.
Yours and BillJones are probably the nicest '21's I've ever seen....the color and skin are far above average for an 1821.

What a great pair. And I like the idea of having a few coins like this RAW just for the enjoyment factor. Either will regrade, or maybe upgrade, over time.
