“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."
Neither had I heard of it until researching it. I was very, very fortunate to have the opportunity to add it to my Indian Peace Medal collection. Non US federal, or colonial, IPMs are very under the radar and many are rare. French, Spanish, British colonial powers presented medals to secure allegiance of native North Americans not only for their own security, but also as proxies in their fight for influence and economic dominance of the new world. The US continued this practice beginning with George Washington, and more famously Thomas Jefferson with Lewis and Clarks westward adventure on the Missouri River.
Just an awesome era in our country's numismatic history.

Like a couple of others, I had never heard of these medals. Thanks so much for posting.
The holder in which the medal resides--is it part of what was given to the Native American chief or is it more modern?
