Talk about a dealer being Old School!!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
My boss still uses a Rol-O-Dex!!! image

We still give him grief about it, too, especially the way he files in such a non-alphabetical way. My first name is Al and my last initial is H. so I'm at the front with the A's!! It gets even worse when you try to locate a name like last night when he called me from the road and asked me to look someone up. Fortunately, me and the young woman I work with have gotten in the habit of keeping numbers we think we might need.

Just a little while ago he came over and showed me a note he was sending to another dealer. He had gotten anew business card from him yesterday. The note said in part "I wanted to return this card I got from your father about 30 years ago. I'll replace it with the ones you gave me yesterday." The old one was stapled and taped in place and glued to a new Rol-O-Dex card to keep it in the file.

He has a cell phone but prefers the "old way" to keep his numbers. Weird.

Al H.

What I find surprising is that most younger people don't/can't remember phone numbers, they need to refer to their smart phone. Maybe that is why they call it a "smart" phone, because it can remember stuff...that the user puts in it.

My family was watching an episode of Barney Miller and there was a Rol-O-Dex on the desk that the cop was flipping through, and one of my girls (16 at the time) asked what is he doing? as he was looking of a phone number.

There was a recent article, that the US Air Force still has to transport the nuclear codes on 8" floppy disc's. Their computer system is 30+ years old.

I have a microfiche reader to let me check on some of my ancient car parts.

My Rol-O-dex is only 21 years old.

Are you saying there's something now that's better?

Al, does he wear button panel shirts with a pocket protector full of pens in the breast pocket and have a 9 volt battery powered calculator in a zipper case that is strapped to his belt ? image

A guy I share tables at shows with does not even have Internet or smart phone. He called me other day asking if I had CDN monthly. I told him dumped them and their more expensive subscription for CF which is free. I told him I base my offers on a percentage of what I can sell an item for not some "bid" number.

He does it all old school. I really can't blame these people - the new world of work sux anyway and gets sleazier or more sweatshop every day. If people don't organize they will be soon replaced by AI and hung out to dry.

I have so many "bosses" it's ridiculous, but only for another year. I retire in July of 2017(at least that's MY plan) and the list will get a lot shorter.

I am an old guy... however, I have embraced technology all along the way... bought my first computer in 1983...upgraded all along the way.... right now, I think there are about nine 'older' computers in the house that have been superseded by technology (although still usable and containing information). I enjoy it... and my grandkids are amazed at my skills and the fact that I am online in so many venues. And yes, I still do not post pictures. Cheers, RickO

My Rolodex worked great but it's long gone. The numbers surely expired and the relevant ones transferred into my phone from necessity. The iPhone is basically a computer with a phone app and a wonder for sure. A hand help porthole to an alternate universe!

Go back in time and someone asks you what that devise is. In my hand I hold the keys to all knowledge and recorded human history. What do you use it for? To argue with people on the internet! Lol. Never clutter the mind memorizing things you can easily look up.

hey, Rick, do you remember when I chided you a little to post some pictures?? that seems like so long ago and I guess I just needed to get to know you better. if you'd like I can send you a Nikon 950 that takes great pictures and is easy to use.

it would fit in nice with one of those old PC's that no doubt has Windows XP Pro!!

BTW, I think I have 2-3 old ones in the house. I can't make myself get rid of them.image

I still have a Rolodex, but only 4 numbers on it I use.

The funny thing is, I was an early systems programmer, but have been through the 12 step program and almost never program anymore, I guess I burned out.

I am the least phone-centric person I know. I bought my cellphone to make calls (gasp!). My wife is addicted to her phone/laptop/tablet and it drives me nuts.
