Most obsessed all consuming collector

We certainly have knowledge of some of the great collectors of US coins. But who was most consumed 24/7 with collecting ?

Breen?
Although he did dabble in other interests. . .

I think that because Harry and Jules were both into die varieties and die states, that might give them the edge.
John Pitman exhibited his coins more.
Bottom line for me, I think, is Jules.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I spend about 8 hours a day on the internet looking at over 3,000 dimes....just saying.
Here's our guy!
Maybe you guys have, but I've never heard of a another collector
Spending 8 hours a day, every day, pursuing their numismatic passion!
I doubt the "Greats" did either. JMO

That is dedication---I looked at your collection--impressive. What will you do when you finish it?

I don't know if I will ever get the Complete Dimes Complete Varieties set done. There are some Roosie varieties (clad) that don't have a single pop yet. I look at every 1983-D and 1967 I see and nada. Of course how many of those dates do you see online for sale. I probably only see a handful of those dates a month if I am lucky.

With that type of dedication, perhaps he should sell his services.

I nominate J. Sanford Saltus - the hobby quite literally killed him in 1922.
I had to look this one up.
"Saltus died on June 23, 1922 under peculiar circumstances: while in London to attend a meeting of the British Numismatic Society, Saltus poisoned himself with cyanide. After his death it was suggested that Saltus had committed suicide because a secret engagement was not going well; however, the cause of death was officially listed as "death by misadventure" - the coroner held that Saltus had been drinking ginger ale while cleaning coins with the cyanide and had accidentally mistaken the glass of cyanide for the one containing ginger ale. At the time of his death, Saltus was president of both the New York Numismatic Club and British Numismatic Society."

I kinda consider you a dealer with Legend and all. But still my hats off to you.

See, the only difference between most collectors and guys like Pittman, Harry W. Bass, Virgil Brand is money. We have many obsessive collectors here on the boards, but a lack of funds keep their collections and thus their identity from making the news.

From what I have read about Pittman, he wasn't independently wealthy. He worked as a chemist and bought coins over decades. That's one reason what he did was so incredible

Well since 730,000,000 1983-D dimes were minted and lets imagine if they were actually available, and you looked at 1,000 a day, it could take 2,000 years to search them all to find a nice rare variety. That would be an obsession for sure. LOL

Eliasberg? He must have spent a lot of time finding everything. Collecting in the 1930's and 1940's would most likely be a lot more time consuming. A lot of his coins were the finest known.
He was only doing year and mintmark. With deep pockets he could look thru every auction and find those in a short period of time.
Doing varieties with shallow pockets is a much harder task.
