So, I never opened my ATB boxes from the Mint

I've bought all of the Mint's ATB issues since Day 1, and never opened the boxes. Well, except for the 1st one and another one later on that I forgot and opened by mistake.

Considering the huge cost of certification plus FS, not to mention shipping - what would be a good move at this point? I suppose that I could just go ahead & open them and enjoy them for awhile.

Are any of these actually worth getting certified? The boxes do take up some serious space, and it's kinda hard to know if there's a real market for these beyond the normal ebay channel.

You basically own a complete set of unopened FS pucks. There can not be too many of those out there. Way down the road you could sell the unopened whole set for some decent $$.

You can find the first puck unopened on the open market and have a full unopened set.

IMO, these will not be worth any major premiums in what is considered a normal lifespan of

humans. Of course, I could be (and have been) totally wrong. A review of current auctions would give you the best idea of value.... I can understand your issue... for many years I purchased mint sets (Proof, Business) and now they mainly are sitting taking up space.

It sounds like you bought these as an investment rather than to open and enjoy as a hobby.
If so, this is an example of how this "asset class" can be a very bad investment tying up your money and not having a real market or means of disposal.
I doubt you will ever realize any significant gain on these as Ricko mentioned.
I would unload them all, probably peace meal will be the only way.
This will clear up space in your life and free up funds for other more liquid investments or to spend on coins you enjoy owning and looking at.
    JMHO.
    Good luck.

I've been wondering the same thing. I have a set unopened and one that I've opened and came across this Yellowstone with no satin finish. I've just noticed this a few weeks ago after deciding to take another look at them after almost 6 years. Think I'll close the set back up and revisit them in another 6 years as I just like having them.

Here's a few pics of the Yellowstone next to a Grand Canyon.

Some of these earlier ones in First Strike 70 are worth a good premium and are well worth grading.

Also - the chance of a 70 is very high. These grade very well.

Send them in to GC for grading and auctioning. They are just "stuff" and completely replaceable.

Well most do OK, but I sent in 15 Gettysburg's before I got one 70. Plus silver dropped like a rock since then so those 69's are basically just overpriced paperweights now. I would leave them in the boxes and wait for silver to be over $30 before thinking much about them.

Edited to add that 2 were 67's and one a 68. I sent them in unopened so I learned that I should always look first if within the 30 day window.

That's a very low grade percentage - we have not experienced that yet on the 5 ozers. Even an old deal of sealed boxes we sent in three weeks ago graded 75% as 70s (these were earlier 2010-2012 dates).

    Ian,

I may have very possibly the lowest percentage submission luck of all time as far as modern 70's. Just the way it works out for me, and you are right it does not seem to match the population statistics. I sent in 5 "perfect" looking gold Kennedy's and yes all five were 69's. That is why I just tend to buy them now in 70 from others. And yes some of the older pucks do still have a nice premium now as you mentioned.

Edited to add that I also sent in unopened Mint boxes of 5 Vicksburg's, Chickasaw's, and Olympics and all 15 were 69's. Also looking at my records I sent in 8 Grand Canyon's and again all were 69's. I still can't see anything wrong with them. That is when I started to just buy them in 70 and gave up.

My guess is if I sent them all to you, possibly half would come back 70 now if reconsidered.
