No love for the varieties?
been a long time since I've posted on the forum but curious as to the opinions of others on why it seems that the value of varieties for a number of coins, all denominations, set by some third party graders never seems to reflect the actual auction prices realized. Almost seems like their trying to "devalue" them in most cases. Anyone else ever feel this way?

I am working on my 19th Century Everyman Set and trying to sell of some varieties that don't fit (graded over AU58+).
Variety collectors are definitely an esoteric group.

I've been dabbling at a date set of large cents. At the last EAC convention where I bought a number of pieces, I told the dealer, "I don't care about the better varieties and will not pay a premium for them."
When I was dealer I found that I had to get lucky to sell a rare variety for a better price. Usually I took such items to the specialist dealers and sold those coins to them. As others have said the market for varieties is spotty.
Going through the "sell" process right now...not much interest among dealers, and those that are don't want to pay for the variety, not even if attributed on the label insert. I may have to send 'em to Heritage to get some exposure.

So registry mania is actually inducing someone to downgrade!
Please send your "overgraded" shield nickel varieties to me.

Very few have sold over the years and the Mint state quantity is around 15 pieces.
After starting the 10 day Ebay auction at .99 cents things went nicely but closed with a wimper at slightly less than $1400.
I predicted $1500 so I was not far off.
I have another mint state example but will list it in the BIN.
I feel that 20th century coinage can be mint state, but 19th century and earlier should be at least lightly "circulated".
