No love for the varieties?

been a long time since I've posted on the forum but curious as to the opinions of others on why it seems that the value of varieties for a number of coins, all denominations, set by some third party graders never seems to reflect the actual auction prices realized. Almost seems like their trying to "devalue" them in most cases. Anyone else ever feel this way?

Valuation of varieties can be tough. Limited amount of collectors, with an unknown number of mintage can lead to skewed results. Some pieces bring great prices compared to price guide but who's to say that it will happen again? Once the top Registry players have thiers, who else is there to buy them in holders?

Going through the "sell" process right now...not much interest among dealers, and those that are, don't want to pay for the variety, not even if attributed on the label insert. I may have to send 'em to Heritage to get some exposure.

I am working on my 19th Century Everyman Set and trying to sell of some varieties that don't fit (graded over AU58+).

Variety collectors are definitely an esoteric group.

I agree with oih82w8........interest in varieties is very spotty.

Since I am largely, but not exclusively, type and historical interest collector, I don't care about varieties and won't pay for them.

I've been dabbling at a date set of large cents. At the last EAC convention where I bought a number of pieces, I told the dealer, "I don't care about the better varieties and will not pay a premium for them."

When I was dealer I found that I had to get lucky to sell a rare variety for a better price. Usually I took such items to the specialist dealers and sold those coins to them. As others have said the market for varieties is spotty.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

So registry mania is actually inducing someone to downgrade! image

Please send your "overgraded" shield nickel varieties to me.

I sold a rare VAM that our host said was worth $2300.

Very few have sold over the years and the Mint state quantity is around 15 pieces.

After starting the 10 day Ebay auction at .99 cents things went nicely but closed with a wimper at slightly less than $1400.

I predicted $1500 so I was not far off.

I have another mint state example but will list it in the BIN.

Sorry Howard, my Shield Nickels are some of the few that do not require replacement to be incorporated into the Everyman Set.

I feel that 20th century coinage can be mint state, but 19th century and earlier should be at least lightly "circulated".

I find most varieties to be only of passing interest. Certainly would not pay for them. Cheers, RickO
