Trying to understand Retro Old Green holders
I've been seeing for a while that PCGS has been offering Retro Old Green holders for an additional $4 with a submission. Help me understand why someone would want to pay more for the color of the label in the holder. Is it just a gimmick to charge a little more or is there a practical reason for someone to want the Retro Old Green holder?
I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

Surely some folks will pay for them. Something different, I guess. Maybe they hope that one day they will command a premium.
Lance.
Some people like chrome on their vehicles, white lettered tires, whatever.
Stainless fridges work just as well as the white ones.
I think they look pretty cool and don't disparage anyone who chooses this option.

But, I do like the look of the originals and prefer them when I can find the right coin.

In California, you can now get "retro" orange on black license plates for your car. They're very popular on "retro" cars like recent model Challengers and Camaros.
Those new black plates are cool!
For the longest time (and maybe still) cars that had original black plates traded at a significant premium. It used to be a sign that a car had been in California it's whole life. The idea being a car that always lived in California would be in better condition than............. oh wow, great analogy!

Though not as good as the original---getting a coin in a new retro holder is an easy way to do that, as it conjures up some beauty and reminiscence of things past.
Some say it cheapens the brand. It may or may not. But I guess that I see nothing wrong with it, since the new ones are easily distinguishable and since people do seem to like them.
Would I buy a new retro one? As a submission--no. But if I saw a nice coin already in one---yes.

(1) As with anything 'retro' -- there is a nostalgic appeal for some people (usually older folks, who fondly identify with the 'retro' look).
(2) For those who like Old Green Holders and/or have OGH sets, it's an opportunity to have a matching look -- for coins that they're having trouble finding in OGHs.
(3) Some coins look better against the background of the green label. As an example, I think gold coins look much nicer with a green background.
Second I really like the way they look with My Washington Quarters and Only doing Variety Ones.....
Third its my money......Enjoy

I agree with all, especially #3.

After many years of conditioning, eyes are drawn to the OGH labels, consciously and unconsciously. If you're a dealer looking to attract potential buyers to coins in your showcase, the retro holders are a bargain.
Initially that's probably true. But, then the collector has to actually buy something out of that case. If they were looking for the old style OGH's they will be disappointed. When doing a show I at last quickly scan every coin in every case in my areas of interest. While a green label may get my attention first, it won't keep it very long if the coin is not nice looking and/or a retro holder. I'd probably ask these dealers, do you have any classic ogh's that aren't currently out in the case?
Some newbies might actually buy these things figuring they're getting the real thing from the 1990's. If they repro enough of these that should cheapen the real ogh's by a bit. It would be nice if submitters chose only their solid for the grade and high end coins for these retro submissions. But, I'd guess it will probably be anything but that.
They dropped the ball by using the Arial font instead of the superior Univers font that was on the originals.
I'm pretty sure that was intentionally done to avoid undue confusion.

Are these just for the 30th anniversary (as marked on the holder) and then going away as an option or will it be permanent?
