Does a holed coin make it more likely to be genuine as opposed to counterfeit?

Curious whether counterfeit coins ever come holed and whether a hole can give a clue to it being real. Your thoughts folks?

  • Damage to a coin is no indication of authenticity or its being counterfeit. Many counterfeits are intentionally damaged, cleaned or messed with in order to hide the fact that they're counterfeit.

Or to reveal that fact. I've seen quite a few counterfeits with holes as well as edge test cuts, bites, chopmarks, etc...

Don't give the Chinese any ideas. Most collectors view a hole as the most drastic form of damage aside from extensive mutilation. I think that hole might lower the chances of the piece turning out to be a counterfeit, but it's not at all something that you can assume as a marker for authenticity.

there is no correct answer for your question. counterfeit coins are found with holes in them, just because it has a hole in it do not assume its legit, know what you are buying with or without a hole

When I receive the coin in hand perhaps I can give more details. And yes, I really think my question is a curious one since I knew the coin is readily counterfeited but looked better than a cast copy. So I took a shot that maybe since it was holed it lent more of a sense of it being original.

I'm thinking the odds of a coin being fake might actually be higher if it has a hole in it. This is for a couple of reason, I have seen fake coins that were made purely for jewelry purposes these had holes in them so they could be strung up and warn on a garment. Also, if someone discovers a counterfeit, one use they might have for it is as a jewelry piece. In other words, someone with a knowledge of coins might never put a hole in a real coin, but if they know it is fake they might say who cares lets put a whole in it and get some use out of it.

Damage...be it a hole or otherwise is not a determining factor in authenticity.... ever.

There is a probability here -- coins that have been seriously abused do tend to be genuine. For example, gold dollars that have been in jewelry are typically genuine, especially the ones with solder mounts that have been crudely removed. Yes, there are exceptions, but not enough to change the probability ratio.

On the other hand, a 1776 Continental dollar with a hole in it could be just about anything, from genuine to a modern cast replica.

Many years ago when I was an Authenticator at ANACS we got in a 1796 quarter in good condition with a bad scratch in the right field. Eventually I decided that nobody would counterfeit a coin in that low a grade. About a year later a dealer came up to me at a show and handed me that coin with that certificate plus another coin in the same grade with the same scratch.

    Oops!

Was still a $1,000 coin in that condition at that time. We bought it back. What would the holed coin be worth if genuine?
