Two New SF Half Eagles

BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,367 ✭✭✭✭✭
Two dates which I have always liked and have never owned added today from DWN.

The 1867-S is a tough date like all of the post Civil War dates between 1866 and 1876. Perhaps 100 or less are extant.

The second addition is the rarest post Civil War $5 and a very tough date with likely only a few dozen known in all grades. This choice VF is a borderline EF which is exceptionally choice for the grade.

    Love the crusty old gold!

What is going with the 1876-S Ear Hole and lobe?

Every 1876-S has a diagnostic "earring" punch. A few other dates in the half eagle series bear the same, the exact date eludes me but an 1850's (1851 if I recall) Charlotte $5 has this as well.

Thanks for the interesting fact, I learned something new today.

Great pickups. Are these two newps part of a new set or date run?

Looks like a centered position. Any idea why it was made? I see one of the 1851-C varieties doesn't have it.

    Nice half eagles!

    Nice looking coins.

Yes, most '51-C Half Eagles have the centered "earring" punch. There is one variety that doesn't have the punch, and is much rarer than the variety with.

    Got Crust....y gold?

Very nice pickups! The 1876-S $5 is a very tough coin, definitely the hardest S-mint to run down outside of the five Civil War dates. I have the Rattler VF20 example (that Doug mentions in his write-up as more like a VF35, though thankfully I bought it from a dealer for much less about a year after the noted auction) and the earlobe piercing is still quite easy to see. Interestingly, there is also a diagnostic earhole on the 1876-S $2.50 (as well as a second diagnostic: a raised horizontal bar near the top of the neck, found on all genuine coins).

I pounced on the 76-S quickly and then thought about how good of a value that 67-S was and bought it too.

Um...that's not the variety without the punch.

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,367 ✭✭✭✭✭
Right, I posted the other issue with the punch coming from my initial statement that another Charlotte date has the same feature. Coin facts also has an example of the variety without for those curious.

I've enjoyed reading this thread a lot. I wish we had more threads discussing some of the less well-known classic rarities. I wonder how many people have passed on an 1876-s half eagle because it had "damage" to the ear?

It's interesting that the 1876-s $5 is such a rare coin, whereas every silver coin dated 1876-s is a common date (excluding varieties). Perhaps the 1876-s $5 is overlooked....
