Which do you prefer?

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭
As most of you know, I decided to put together a raw toner Dansco of Washingtons. Along the way, I ended up getting enough Washingtons to fill 3 Danscos. While for the most part, it is relatively easy to figure out the coin to put in the A, B and C Danscos, some date/mm are not so easy to figure out. Which one of these two 1940 Washingtons do you prefer? Why? Do you like them? The coins were imaged by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.

The first one. The second one has what looks like a gouge (or delamination) in the obverse left field. I also think that the first one has nicer toning.

Hi Skyman. Put me down for #1 as well. I like the fields and toning.

#1. Better surfaces, more even color, fewer hits.

The only thing #2 might have going for it is better luster....but it's hard to compare via photos.

I like the first one. It has got cleaner surfaces and a golden glow to it. Both are struck up well.

Gotta agree that the first coin looks to be the best of the pair.

Number one is the better coin due to the obverse damage on number two... but I prefer

the look of number two...Cheers, RickO

Thank you guys for your thoughts. In hand, the scuff in the left obverse field of # 2 does not appear as obtrusive as it does in the image. Having said that, technically # 1 is cleaner. I would say the toning is roughly comparable as to attractiveness on both coins. The difference is that the toning on # 1 is predominantly on the reverse, while the toning on # 2 is on both sides. Luster is good on both coins, with the nod to # 2.

^^ This. Though I wouldn't kick either coin out of my collection, my personal tastes run to coins with the look of #2.

The first one bud for obvious reasons. Lot a hits on the other. Kinda distracting.

I prefer the first coin, as its color is a preference of mine. The first coin's reverse has better breast and tail feather strike(or appears to) while the second coin appears to have a better obverse hair strike, but has a more dirty appearance to me. The color and the reverse breast feathers win out for me.

Neither. If your goal is a toner set, why compromise that on a common coin? Focus, grasshopper.....

Focus. Actually, that's what I'm trying to do. I started collecting space artifacts in 2007, and quickly realized that I couldn't collect BOTH space artifacts and coins at the level I'd like, so one of them had to drop to second place. Much as I Love coins, space was closer to my heart (and IMO a Significantly better financial investment), so I've focused the overwhelming amount of my collecting dollars on it... somewhere on the order of $9 or $10 to $1 (space to coins) in any given year.

That means my bigger ticket coin purchases must be focused, so I've narrowed that down to two specific sets. (I am also upgrading my first coin collecting Love, toner business strike Franklins, in my Registry set, but that is very few and far between at this stage). The first set is 1893 proof cameo (no gold). At this point, I only need to get the quarter in PR65CAM (maybe PR65DCAM or PR66CAM, depending). The second set is 1858 business strike coins. There are 29 Type/MM slots to fill. I've got a Long way to go. Given the rarity of some of the Type/MM, instead of setting a common grade across all the slots, I've set a common top dollar value across the board that I'll spend on any given coin. Due to the rarity of the coins in the level I'm looking for, I'm generally only finding one or two coins total (between the two sets) in any given year.

Still, as mentioned, I Love coin collecting, so I'm working on several low cost fun endeavors. My first go around on that was building a slabbed 1940 - 1964 Washington set in predominantly MS66 (with a few MS65, and a fair slug of MS67 coins included). By collecting these dates I kept away from the more expensive 1930's dates. Here's a link to the collection if anyone is interested. Click on the Gallery or Slideshow buttons/links if you wish to see the coins, as all coins have images.

    Washington Registry set

That got me interested in Washingtons per se, so my next endeavor was to build a raw Washington Dansco, which has morphed into building 3 Washington Danscos as I kept upgrading the raw set. At this point, my raw set has reached the point where to upgrade any more would take it into slabbed coin territory, of which I've already cracked a few (NOT from my Registry set) for my top Dansco set, which defeats the whole purpose of this endeavor.

FWIW, here are pix of my slabbed set 1940 Washington, PCGS MS66. (The lines in front of George's head are actually die polish lines that are accentuated by the light angle):

    imageimage

By focusing the vast majority of my collecting dollars on space artifacts I've built up certainly a National Class collection, and most likely a World Class collection. For example, here is the centerpiece of my collection, the Apollo 12 Flight Plan, in essence the Log for the second manned Moon landing. The Apollo 11 Flight Plan has been broken up into it's constituent pages and sold off that way, so mine is the earliest complete Moon landing "Log" in existence... and I still get to have fun collecting coins.
