Post your AU58+ coins

I just made my first AU58+ coin at PCGS and would love to see others. Post if you have them, and especially if you make them image

Whoops, nevermind, didn't see that 'plus' -- I have none, though I made a few 58's eleven or twelve years back that would surely warrant it. One FH SLQ in particular comes to mind. Oh well.

Here is a star, but I guess is equal to a plus? It is also green stickered.............

Star isn't the same as plus. I don't know why they just didn't call this grade AU59.

I think I only have one. Posted here before:

Seth Chandler and I were just talking about this the other day. What in the heck is an AU58+? A nice AU58 with eye appeal?

Uncommon grade. This is one I sold a while back. It actually looks better in person.

This is a nice tribute. But to be honest, I've seen some 58+'s that made me shake my head.

58+ is better marketing than 59.

I was looking specifically at 58+ coins, and they are kinda hard to find that are reasonable in price. The closest I have is an AU58 Gold CAC.

There is ONE at Collectorscorner 1920-S Saint Gaudens PCGS AU58+ ...and it's CAC approved as well.

There are some at Collectors.com although some are duplicates, ebay items listed in conjunction with storefront sales.

I happen to think that we will start seeing significant increase in AU58+ coins versus MS61/62 coins coming out of TPG's as essentially AU58+ will become a catch-all for the old "too nice for a 58" conundrum, that culminated with 10's of thousands of AU coins in MS61/62 holders...

And it wouldn't surprise me if the cost-spread counterintuitively narrowed between AU58+ and MS62, as I suspect people would opt to pay more $$ for the PQ AU58+ coins rather than hacked up/unattractive MS62 UNCs.

oh heck if we are going to play the "this should be an AU58+"...that is a good looking "half saw buck".

    Brian, I hear you...

One of the challenges of collecting for a long time/or one series/or avidly or all of the above, is that you/me/we all tend to see a lot of coins and inadvertently rank them (practically speaking) within their own realm. I don't know about you, but I fall into this trap frequently and have to remind myself to not go there...

I ultimately believe more in coin ranking than coin grading and would immediately switch over to that methodology if it was offered by a TPG.

I would not call it "broke the rules", bend 'em a bit and test their range of motion. image

As mentioned above, there are not a whole lotta AU58+ coins out there...your gold piece fits right in! image

    Birds of a feather...

I have a few + graded coins in my collection but none of em are 58. Cool grade though.

Disagree. It is a proof like coin. It came from the greatest type set (Jimmy Hayes) and the greatest No Motto half eagle set (Milas). Consider there are 40-50 known in all grades and this coin is about #4 in the condition census. You can find the write-up of this particular coin and issue here:

Its a beautiful coin. That is not in question. But that doesn't change its technical merits. If I'm wrong, so is NGC and so is CAC.

This 1839-O quarter eagle should be in an AU-58+ holder, but it's in an Old Green Label (OGH) before PCGS was giving "+" signs. The coin is nicer than a lot of MS-62 coins I've seen.
