1869-S Seated Liberty Quarter -- what do 'ya think?

Hey gang, I've owned 4 of these now (ironically all XF45 examples), and then stumbled upon this one recently, and at a great price!

It is in an NGC XF45 holder, and upon closer examination has abundant luster and a decent amount of "meat" for a 45 (at least from where I sit). It also looks better than my current PCGS XF45 (in terms of originality, luster, and detail)...so what do you think?

Is this a no brainer XF45 @ PCGS or do think it is better/worse, and why? Thanks for your input!

You need some luck to put this coin into a PCGS XF45 holder unless its surface is original (can't tell from the photo due to dark toning).

What a terrific coin. The coin itself has the look which is more important than whether it crosses. Looks 45 to me-not sure or convinced the opinion that matters will agree.

Actually, that is very well said. I wholeheartedly agree, and I will most likely replace my current XF45 with this young lady regardless of what it grades at PCGS image

It's really really difficult to find an original circulated 1869-S with decent eye appeal...

PS. I think she has a double nose or is it me?

I like the coin but it is a PC40 all day. Too much wear across Liberty and on the right wing.

Very nice! Maybe on a good day it crosses depending on the original look in hand. The upper right corner of the shield is weak for 45.

Here's my current PC45, which I will replace with the new one posted in the original post...

The new one has a lot more meat & luster in hand. While the one I currently have in my set is clearly conserved, it was still an acceptable placeholder for a while image

I believe the PC45 one here could be from a later die state than the new one I just bought...

The "new" 1869-S is my choice. Is it 40 or 45? Does it really matter if you like it and intend to keep it in your set? It is a very nice coin and I would leave it just as is. If, at some time in the future, you want to sell it then, and only then, decide if it is worth the cost to have it graded again. Too much money is wasted on unneeded reholdering of coins that are going to be part of a collection for a long time.

I definitely prefer the new one... not sure it will go 45... but certainly could. Cheers, RickO

Central obverse tend to be a bit flat on this date and MM. Nice coin.

I don't like the conserved one. Someday down the road it might not regrade. The fuss budgets might mention those 2 left obv field spots. Most of the 1866 to 1872 with motto S mint quarters seem to come cleaned, corroded, hacked, or burnt. So your new 69-s is a nice deviation from the norm. From the photos, both seem to be about the same point with the obv die cracks.

I have a PCGS XF40 of this date that I just got graded. I think the OP's new coin will cross at XF45 without trouble. My coin has more wear and is a little less original than the coin shown.

No brainer 45. I love it. Find me a 66-S just like that.

Grade posted, XF40...I should have cracked it instead of sending it in for "cross". Whatever, it is what it is...Alas, just wanted to close the loop on this thread.

Looking at my collection and other coins in the market (and believe me when I tell you, I've handled A LOT of 1869 dated coins), I could probably be a decent grader of 1869 dated material. This is the 5th 1869-S quarter I've owned: the lowest numerical grade received from PCGS, yet the best overall coin -- how ironic.

    Thanks!

This will have to keep until I get to the house.

Finally...the OP coin is really nice! ...and worth the wait.

Kinda crazy that they call that a 40 and the conserved one 45. If observable wear were all there is to it I'd understand, but it's not.

    Still a great coin.

Here is one I regret letting go. It always troubled me as to why it didn't grade higher or CAC. Maybe secondary toning but killer detail and nice luster for a grade of xf45; plus an early -no crack- die state.

I often think for tough dates, grading and CAC works against us. Sure this coin cannot be compared to a common date, but let's face it, if you were to look at the fastfreddie coin or the coin in the OP in context of other 1869-S quarters, they become no brainers.

I have always been a believer in coin ranking versus grading. This way you are comparing a coin to its peers, not some altruistic view of what it should be like.

It's like physical therapy. When they look at range of motion, they look at it compared to your other comparable limb, essentially benchmarking it against you not others. I'm hyper mobile, and if you only looked at one limb, you'd say I have amazing range of motion. If you compare it to my other limb, you'd see I have 30% less range and not fully functional.

Point being... While in absolute terms this might be an XF40, compare it to other 69-S coins and one will quickly realize it's a lot better than you would get in a typical 69-S XF40 holder...

Anyhow, no remorse, just saying that I hope my lifetime sees abolishment of coin grading and transition into coin ranking.

The TPG companies have certainly seen enough samples over the last 25 years...
