No. IIRC, they were used in the oil industry in the middle-east, specifically Saudi Arabia.

Be aware that there are good-quality "reproductions" of these struck in gold.

I suspect that the one pictured at the beginning of this thread is one of them.

come up for auction. If you really want one I would suggest checking

previous auction prices and by it there.

These are not coins. They have no face value and are not legal tender. They are strictly bullion which are now a popular collectable since they were produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Think of them are being gold rounds. As Dan said---there are many counterfeits so be careful buying a raw example. Also agree with coinsarefun that they have a neat design especially with the extra wide rim.

The shield on the one in the OP looks a little off to me. Seems like it has an angle to the top going down L-R that the slabbed one doesn't.
