Early 20th century half eagle GTG reveal

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of my favorite cheap ways to acquire gold is common slabbed early 20th or 19th century US gold. When I find them with low premiums, especially if they have some eye appeal, I snag them. They're just so much more interesting that gold eagles.

Guess the grade?

I just picked up my first one ever, for the reasons you illustrated. An 1898, but in AU, and dirty.

    I'm growing tired of Barbers.

So, while looking, I can't believe how jacked up 62's are.

    Yours looks clean.

    I say 64.

    Ditto. And a 55 wouldn't surprise me.

I would guess that it is graded 62. I wonder how much of the hair and eagles breast is strike weakness vs. rub.

Thanks for the guesses. I wasn't fishing for compliments on this one--it is what it is. I thought it was graded low (and strangely). But that just meant I didn't pay extra for it. I'd be fine if it was a 55 or 58. Luster, cartwheel, and a slab for essentially melt? It's all good image
