1799 Dollar PCGS Genuine Not Gradable

OK so I have a PCGS Genuine Not Gradable 1799 Bust Dollar. She looks to be around VF to EF in condition but has been cleaned hence the determination.

My question is...would it be more worthwhile to get a legitimate grade with the cleaned statement from someone like ANACS or just leave the coin as is? I intend to keep the coin for my own collection so I dunno if its even worth the hassle frankly.

You can request a details grade from PCGS. It will come back XF Details ~ Cleaned. Get a TrueView while you're at it.

That's what I would do... but maybe not the TrueView (I'm happy with my own photos.)
    When in doubt, don't.

Unfortunately that coin looks like it has been polished. I'd leave in the PCGS holder. I'm not sure how much getting a VF-30 sharpness grade on it would be worth. I don't think I'd spend the money on it.

Frankly it's not even worth the hassle.

Could you crack it, pocketpiece it for awhile (enough to possibly wear it down so it is natural and not polished/cleaned), and then be happy?

The cleaning is obvious. The level of detail is obvious. The fact that it is genuine, and guaranteed to be genuine by PCGS is worth knowing. Sending it back for a "details" grade doesn't add much IMO.

    Leave it.

It can be dirtied just as easily as it got cleaned. Time in a bottle won't make it any better.

I would keep it as is.... still a genuine coin.... and a great one to own. So, unless you

are extremely OCD, I would say leave it.... oh, I already did...image Cheers, RickO

Getting that coin into another slab with a details grade noted will not realistically improve the value of the coin.

I don't think that using it as a "pocket piece" will make the "cleaning/polishing" go away.

Missed out on a spotted one the other day on ebay , which went for $1200 and change. Drats… even the problems are just out of reach. image

when it comes time to sell, the buyer most likely wont care what the plastic says. if I was buying it I wouldn't care what the plastic says

That's the thing, was it harshly cleaned? Lightly cleaned? Is it rub? Knowing could add or take away a couple hundred. But than again, it always boils down to what the next owner thinks and can appreciate.

I agree. It's hard to get a coin that has been polished life that to look natural without removing a lot of metal. Even than it might not look right.

  • Thanks. I think I'll just leave it as is based on the feedback. Having the exact grade is nice, but unneeded in my case since its so obvious.

I kinda like the "Genuine Not Gradable" tag as you won't see that too often.
