From my experience, the reverse is almost always better than obverse. Just recently I acquired a 1912 Canadian $10 gold and a 1913 Canadian $5 gold for the type. Both pieces were graded PCGS MS-62. The obverses are indeed no better than MS-62, maybe 63 for the $5. The reverse of both coins look like MS-66 or even 67.
I've seen this on early U.S. gold coins too. The reverse is almost always better than obverse.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
