Looking for an understandable explanation on this one...

Ok, so I sent in my 5 sets of sealed 2011 Silver Eagle Anniversary sets to NGC. And wow- its been about 3-4 years since I sent in coins to them and things have changed. Not for the better at least not for the customer- the fees have really gone up in many categories. It shouldn't be that expensive - I was on the fence about sending them to PCGS but its sometimes easier just to go with what you already know and besides - NGC offers some multiholder units for coins and that would be good to have a set of 70s housed in one case. Well - no longer the case on that either!!! And getting first-strike or early release (which is silly but does get a higher premium for some unknown reason) won't even be done anymore if the coins aren't in there by 30 days.

Ok, anyway enough lamenting and complaining and whining. Lets get to the point at hand shall we???

The coins can't be graded as anniversary sets unless sealed. Agreed. Yes, of course. So, they are sent in sealed and accepted properly as such. No problems so far. Now, about 2-3 weeks later the coins are all graded- pretty good turnout in general but one of the bullion coins of the anniversary set gets graded as:

Artificial Toning - unc details.

Artificial toning?! Who would have artificially toned the coin??????? Help me make some sense of that one?! In any case, I'm not getting that - I'm guessing it makes it worth not so much and not more in this case.

Eagerly awaiting accurate replies!

the most accurate reply: Call NGC Customer Service and explain. Then listen to what they have to say. Maybe they think you stored the box on a water heater?

It was a 2011 W coin actually - perhaps thats what they think? It was stored in a cool dry area with the other 24 coins which have no report of any aberrances And how could that only happen to 1 coin of 25 then? Do I possess some magical powers???

Probably an error in reporting the actual grade? have you gotten them back yet?? Does not make sense and any toning cannot be deemed artificial, in my HUMBLE opinion.

Lance, thanks for the proper formatting. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. These are the final grades - I would cut and paste the table with the grades but I can't even write replies with the correct format.

Let's say you have a way to show all the coins were submitted sealed together.....on time before the deadline, show the postage date on boxes if they returned them. You did get the submission form back, right?........I'd say that you have quite the rarity although possibly clerical but who knows........there are collectors for this, right? Oddly funny though. It's like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, a grader unaware the coins were sealed.

Exactly!!! How can you grade 24 other coins all in the same box many of which were 70s then pull out one coin and say artificially toned!? I feel like I'm in bizarro world here! All were in the same sealed box.

I emailed and they stated that sometimes the coins fall out of the capsules during shipping and they will provide NCS service as a 1-time courtesy at no charge. I would prefer a star label and a big payday is all I'm saying. Perhaps I'll try to post a picture when I get the coin back sometime next week.

NGC really, really hates toned ASE's. (I got dinged on a couple of slightly turning 2006 RP's.)

If it toned, even if naturally, it might come back AT.

Threads about this exist. Do a google search.

That the TPG designated one coin out of 25 from a Mint sealed shipping carton as Questionable or Artificial Toning is absurd beyond belief. Their offer to conserve (DIP) the coin and regrade is merely PR damage control on their part.

I have yet to recently see a toned Eagle NGC will straight grade.

I think they may have been burned awhile ago and now have instituted a policy of strictly not allowing modern silver eagles with color in straight graded holders.

I just sent an email asking them to consider regrading pro bono with toning intact thanks to all this great advice! I also asked them to check with the people doing intake to see if there was any report of the coin being dislodged from the capsule which seems hard to believe when it's so hard to get the capsules open with an intentional effort!

Actually a lot of people have reported loose coins when they received them from the mint. You could actually hear them. In light of everything else I think this is what likely happened.

Good luck with your efforts to get this resolved

    See this thread

Appears coin came out of capsule, remained in sealed box, got toned like the one in the above thread and NGC considered the toning to be artificial toning.

IMO all toning from a reaction to the surrounding environment is natural unless a torch, heat or chemical is used.

Ok, I called NGC and they said they have seen numerous purple hued coins like this caused from the velvet in the box and it won't grade unless NCS cleans it up. What do you guys think about submitting it to PCGS? Would anyone submit the coin for me? I'll pay the fees of course just don't want to join and try to understand the nuances of another TPG. Btw Derry your link is broken. I would like to read it though.

Well, you could go to ebay and draw your own conclusions, PCGs or NGC. Just search the following; silver american eagles pcgs toned or silver american eagles NGc toned . But piggybacking with someone would be the way to go since you don't have a subscription with one of them.
