Just had police called to remove an unruly customer.

Still a bit worked up and have some adrenaline rushing so gonna be a few typos in this.

I was walking out front to get some coffee, and a customer is arguing with a co-worker of mine over the value of a 1902 $5 National Bank Note, a better piece. He had it in his hands and is walking towards the door when I stop him. Im a big guy so he figured he better stop there. He goes into this rant about how he set his Five dollar bill down in trade and is now going to leave with this one. I asked him if he collects paper money and understands that value of rare notes. Of course he says no and steps towards me. At this point I grab him by the wrist and take the note away from him. At this point our security guard walks up and explains to him, he can either leave now or the police will escort you out. He chose to sit down and pick up a newspaper. I try to level with the guy about rare collectibles, be he wouldn't have any of it.

Who needs coffee with excitement like this in a coin shop.

O'boy, This is what the collecting public forgets. All the looney's as well as the thiefs. You have to feel for an Dealer with all the headaches they go through daily. Not to even mention they have "overhead" to take care of even before making a profit. I have a close friend as a Dealer so I know and I see it for myself. So, the next time one walks in a coin store, keep these things in mine knowing who and what the man/woman is thinking behind the counter when you walk in.-joey

Geez! Freaky stuff there. I just hope he isn't one of those nuts that tries to return one day in order to retaliate.

Sitting down and picking up a paper sounds strange, but something like that is a common reaction for a very agitated person to buy time to think of what the next move will be in the face of someone having the upper hand. He has to decide how to accept defeat and save face or come up with a better plan. He's more than a typical unhappy difference-of-opinion customer.

Sort of like that candy commercial where everything stops while the person in trouble eats a candy bar and time briefly stops.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

So he wanted to trade his $5 bill in an equal trade for your $5 bill? Sounds fair to me. image

Yeah, I think there was something going on with this customer that he wasn't addressing. Something just seemed off with him.
Sorry, won't be showing the video.

He knew exactly what he was trying to do and met his match, obviously and clearly, failing. (opinion)

In my time in the shops I have had people wandering through their lives in painful ignorance attempt to buy bust halves for 50 cents each because that was what was written on the flip insert, and $20 gold pieces for a $20 bill for the same reason. However, the way this guy was headed for the door says that he knew that an even exchange was not in order. He may or may not be crazy, but he knew that what he was doing was wrong.

Sounds like a typical day on the "Hard Core Pawn" TV show.

Watch a couple of episodes and you will totally understand why Detroit went bankrupt.

Anyway, glad the situation was defused.

I take it the note he was "trading" was not as valuable as the note of yours? Sounds a lot off his rocker and stupid too.

    Glad all are uninjured.

I hope that your state has mental hygiene laws. It certainly appears that this person needs to be committed within the scope of such.

Wouldn't someone casing the joint want to remain under the radar, not potentially in police custody?

Not if he was dumb enough to think he could put on a show to see what the response would be, and then walk out without being detained. He may have buddies waiting in the wings.

Well at the coin club meeting tonight I talked with the other local dealer afterwards. He had the same guy come in his shop shortly after being removed from ours. Acting much in the same manner, started demanding things till the owner threatened to call the police which prompted him the flee.

We both agree that if we spot him at the upcoming coin show that we will be calling the police weather he is causing a scene or not. Better safe than sorry with this type of individual.

I would say if he had walked out the door with the item without paying your price he is a shoplifter.

Somehow, I just don't think that Jinx86 works at a bank where such transactions might occur.

Agree, by the way his behavior is described, he may have mental problems. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Yep.... there are some strange people out there...make sure all employees are advised about

the incident... and a picture of the individual should be kept behind the register... have the

police on speed dial...You may not have seen the last of this individual...Cheers, RickO
