Goldberg Auctions

I have never participated in one of Goldberg's Auctions, but am planning to. I was searching the archives and see a lot of coins I would have been interested in during prior auctions don't have a price realized, but instead say "Unsold".

What are some of the reasons that it may say "Unsold"? Do they accept offers prior to the listing or are there undisclosed reserves? Any helpful will be appreciated.

Just like most auction houses, the Goldberg's have some kind of reserve system in place. Sometimes the coins open at a pre determined reserve that the consignor sets and if there is no bid online or on the floor it is a pass. More than likely they also have some kind of buy back bid, or reserve the consignor can set that isn't known to the bidders because coins that I have seen sell(or appear to sell) during the floor bidding have shown Unsold and shown up in later auctions.

There are often, if not usually, reserves in auctions.

Only "Dark Side" coins this time around...and some Militaria.

I have participated with Goldberg's before as well...good stuff although a little slow on delivery.

The Goldbergs are auctioning the first part of an exceptional collection of large cents on Sunday. As far as I know, this collection has not been discussed in this forum, surprisingly. Did I miss a pertinent thread? There are some really wonderful pieces in the personal collection of Tom Reynolds, who is not related to me.

    Are any forum members participating?

I haven't bought anything for years, but I used to bid on a number of their auctions and was always happy with the ones that I won.

Okay, I was sort of hoping that some forum members were interested in the Goldbergs event that starts this Sunday, 01/31/16. Although the Tom Reynolds Collection is the headline of the event, the Goldbergs will be auctioning a wide range of items during the days that follow. Have any forum members viewed lots for this sale? Please post observations and opinions.

There was a thread quite a while back announcing that Tom's large cents were going to be in this auction.

I perused a bit of the online catalog when I got the email notice from Goldbergs a few weeks ago, briefly admired some ofTom's coins, then jumped to the Pre-Long Beach catalog to look for cents more in my budget range.

I searched and did not find that thread. Please consider posting a link to it.

The images are impressive, especially of early copper. There are some that I would like to enlarge, print, frame and place above my desk. I repeat, though, that it is really not a good idea to grade coins from images.

    A. I write about inexpensive coins, too, including a recent piece on collecting Classic U.S. coins for less than $100 each:

Classic U.S. silver coins for less than $100 each: 19th Century Types from Three Cent Silvers to Half Dollars

    B. Did WalkerGuy or other readers of this thread actually view large cents in this Goldberg's sale, whether they be in The Tom Reynolds Collection or from other consignments? I was sort of hoping to read opinions about the coins themselves. A numismatist does not have to be able to afford a coin in order to communicate an opinion or viewpoint about it. Would we expect art experts to be able to afford all the famous paintings that they discuss?

I chose them to consign my best silver dollars (should be in their Pre September Long Beach sale). They are quite discriminating in what they accept. Their catalogues/images are top notch. Top notch buyers and probably would get more if they were as effective as Heritage in promoting. They suffer in exposure also by not being represented at major show, not anchoring them with their auction. Some dealers come into town a little early for Long Beach to do Goldberg auctions. Their communication with consigners is refreshingly good. A lot of others thank you for your coins and maybe send off a catalogue and reminder email for the auction, rather than informing you of the progress of coins through upgrade/CAC/crossover/...

I bought some Large Cents at the Tom Reynolds Goldberg auction and they weren't coins owned by Tom, nor were they identified as not being part of Tom's offering. Of course, I bought the coins with eyes wide open based on good pics and with the benefit tpg grading but I was surprised to discover this detail.

It was a few years back. But, the last 2 Goldberg sales I was part of they were within a week of the Long Beach shows. And each individual lot specifically stated if it was part of the major names heading the sale. If not listed you would assume they were not part of those collections.

When I once discussed with a major dealer about bidding in a goldberg sale he said "bid once and thats it"

I found their system similar to the old teletrade (which I think was downright crooked) in that they would bid up to their hidden reserve implying that you were in a bidding war when in fact you were bidding against the book.

may the fonz be with you...always...

    That's disheartening to hear joebb.

I bought a few thousand from them during their last auction prior to Long Beach back in March when they had some Jack Conour half cents on the block.

The camera on the Internet feed just showed two guys. I wonder if anybody else was in the room?

I didn't get in any bidding wars since I had my price set on the lots I was interested in - and I was outbid on most.

I did something I normally don't do - I bid on a lot of ten notes that didn't have pictures. I won it for about $300. There were a couple of crappy ones, but I was real happy with the others in the lot.

Been bidding with Goldberg Auctions for awhile now. I've bid in their live auctions (and yes, there are others in the room besides the auctioneers!), left book bids with them during lot viewing and also have used their online bidding platform. Never once had any feelings of any funny business with my bids. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for every other auction company. The online bidding platform and the quality of images has improved significantly over the past few years and would not hesitate in either bidding with them or consigning coins to them. Many Long Beach dealers participate in the Goldberg sales as they have the invoices ready very quickly following the sale and deliver the coins right to our tables at the Long Beach show; excellent service!

I've always enjoyed going to their office to look at lots. Nice and crusty like a old school steak house

Been to California twice, never to Goldbergs. They have good auctions and are a go to place for early copper for sure.

A little concerned by Joebb's comment...

I can also recommend Goldberg auctions. I've been bidding with them for several years. In that time, I have yet to be upset when I've bid based on their pictures and comparing the coin in hand. When I did have one minor issue, a quick phone call was all it took and they worked their tails off to make it right. Classy guys in my experience.
