Not sure what an obsolete proof is - does this qualify??
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." “A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."
This 1836 pattern gold dollar might not be exactly "obsolete' because it was never accepted. It was sort obsolete from the get-go, but it is an interesting part of the dollar coin revival of 1836, which resulated in the regular issue Seated Dollars in 1840.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I would think the most obsolete proofs excluding bullion and patterns would be 1/2c, 2c, 3c, 20c, trade dollar, $3 and $4. Any others??

Am I the only one who thinks Mesquite's half is a serious undergrads (at least based on the images)?
Nope - would love to see it in person.

This piece makes you wonder what takes to get a cameo designation.

This is my favorite. Not only is it a doubled die (which is "normal" for 1872 shield nickel proofs), it also has a very strongly rotated reverse (which is definitely not normal for any shield nickel proof.

Lakesammman - that Proof Trade is just downright dreamy !!
Interesting to see the Shield Nickel in a Regency Holder.
I was beginning to think only Israeli coins from Danny Kaye's collection
were the only ones in that oversized holder.
Here's a coin that I have the balance of the proof set of...its just my favorite :

The 1866 Seated Dollar looks better than PR63- it is quite attractive.
