Got a Raw 1802 Dollar 30 Minutes Ago. Did I score.

When I mean 30 minutes ago it was technically 3 days ago but it was a large collection of almost entirely common Peace dollars. Also some nice Seated Liberty halves and a few Morgans (Including a pretty nice 91-cc). Collection was inherited from father. Son was a collector but by his own admission wanted the money more than the 500 or so coins. Can't blame anybody.

Now about 30 minutes ago as I go through this large collection I opened a package of what I thought was another set of 1923 Peace and in a 2x2 holder I see this. How in the world me AND the son missed it is beyond me. We went through them in pretty good detail but in hindsight I think we got lazy and just inventoried rolls without actually going through them. Stupid on my part because with my luck there would be 40 cast counterfeits in there.

I have attached some ok not great pictures. Nothing wrong in terms of diameter or weight and nothing glaring to me that says fake but as I have started doing: let the community take this journey with me.

I have an old Bowers-Borckardt somewhere that I am pretty sure I have never, ever had to use. Ever.

    Fake?

I'm the last one to positively declare it fake but it sure looked off to me when I first saw it.

I hate to do this but what is blatant about it? I don't think I have ever even see a raw genuine draped bust one but I have seen a TON of fakes. I get offered those ugly "crooked nose" fakes all the time it seems.

This coin in my extremely limited experience was not in any way blatant to me.

    When in doubt, don't.

I am looking at my new 1500 page RedBook, and unfortunately the 8 and the 2 (in 1802) on your coin look different from the 8 and 2 in the pictures of the 1802 Dollars shown. This is especially true with the 8, which looks completely different. This is not a type I know, as I have never owned one, but I am going to guess fake.

Note how the date is sharp and bold, but the stars and "LIBERTY" are fading out. Stars can be weakly struck, but that is usually only on one part of the coin. If ALL the stars are weakly struck, the date would be also. And the central obverse details are lacking. The denticles on the lower half of the obverse are missing.

The reverse shows more mint luster than would normally be seen on a coin with light wear.

The dentils and stars are screaming sloppy counterfeit. And the date numerals are amateur.

That is why I put a period and not an exclamation point. Ha ha.

Hay I did not even know I had this. I did so my own digging and I have listed 7 known varieties of the 1802 and this does not match any of the 7 so it just about confirms it.

I take full credit. I obviously did not need 3 hours to see it was fake. I am a numismatic genius who knew it was not genuine in 5 seconds flat and just came on here to test you all.

    You passed. Congrats.

Unfortunately the Chinese don't put silver in these things. In the old days a lot of counterfeits were "Unc." Now they are "circulated." It's like the 18th century practices when counterfeiters like Machin's Mills weakly struck their products to make them look like they had been used and accepted by previous owners.

26.91 grams so really nearly spot on in terms of weight.

Counterfeiters can be really good with weight. I have a dozen fake Morgans that are spot in weight and I see them fairly often.

You have a point. They may have needed the fake Bust Dollar to round out a roll of 20 fake dollars. If the thing fits in a conventional dollar roll, that really proves it's bad, although we know already. The Bust Dollars have a larger diameter than the Morgan and Peace dollars.
