I advised this seller to get a Red Book of US coins and read it. Cleaning is a NO NO and please don't let any employees clean her coins.

I get this response:

Dear greatbasincoins,

I don't know what to say to someone like you. Recheck your facts. FYI cleaning is a "in thing". Don't be old fashion. Thanks for your email.

So, am I missing something, am I now out of the loop? Good grief how could this change without a PCGS bulletin to my email????

I paid less than her asking price for an 1876 Twenty Cent Piece in PCGS MS-65.

    No WAIT!

My piece has not been cleaned "for increased eye appeal."

Now I know why her coin is worth more ... image

Some of her other coins have the subtitle, "Coin was Professionally Cleaned for Best Eye Appeal." LOL.

    Gramma is very confused.

I recommended she send it back in for a better cleaning.

She also proudly wrote that ANACS has "Reserved forever" one of her coins!
If it is "reserved", I suppose I can't buy it.

I don't understand your desire to send her a private message. The slab clearly says the coin has been cleaned. She's not misrepresenting anything. Just trying to state a negative as being a positive. But I believe the slab says more than any verbiage in her auction.

I saw an ad in the red book for 2016 about conservation, it shows a dirty coin and then a conserved one side by side. Pretty sure it was there in one of the versions for 2016. Could be misunderstood easily.

This marketing scheme is brilliant actually. I dont think this is a grandma but rather a clever eBay handle

$6K for an 1876 20c piece in an ANACS holder marked "Tooled - Cleaned - Retoned".

Maybe so, but she currently shows 9 items listed but she hasn't had any feedback from sales for over a year

  • If you look at the completed sales you will see that this coin sold for much less in a raw state and is now graded.

Yes same seller. Also I asked what pro company was used to clean the coin as the listing states it is professionally cleaned. The seller replied that they are the one who cleaned the coin. I have now asked the name of their numismatic restoration and conservation company. If they do not provide one then the listing has false claims in it.

You should write back and tell gramma according to your research she is right, and all her coins need to be cleaned better with a wire brush.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • I made an offer on a coin she has listed that isn't cleaned of $10. Told her if it was professionally cleaned I'd pay a heck of a lot more image.

That's about the only thing she got right.

Years ago "obsolete" was often used for a coin series no longer in production. You don't see it much today.

I disagree with you that she was not Misrepresenting anything. She said, "No damage or scratches just cleaned for increased eye appeal." ANACS disagrees with this as well, since they clearly say on the label it has also been tooled.

Amazing.... well, I imagine the seller (Grannie) is trying a new sales angle... not suspecting

that ebay would be reviewed by so many experienced numismatists...her story would appeal to

newbies and bottom feeders... however, the price is out of their range. Cheers, RickO

viewing the coin, and the price I cannot think of one thing to be gained by contacting the seller, she is obviously not a coin expert, so rather than critiquing her why not accept it for what it is ?
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
