From what I understand, Novodel's are official restrikes of historic Russian coinage. Just not sure when the restrikes were done.
A "novodel", as I understand the term, is not actually a restrike but a fantasy piece. In any case, I have no basis for the date of issue and concede that I am as likely wrong as I am correct.

The most cited reference in Russian about Novodels is by Dr. IG Spassky. He wrote a chapter in the 1977 work "Proshloe nashei rodiny v pamiatnikakh numzmatiki, Gosudarstvennyi ordena Lenina Ermitazh, pages 105-125, with many illustrations. Unfortunately, I do not read Russian and have spent no time trying to hunt down a copy. BUT, fortunately, there is a summary of the "types" of Novodels from that book that was given in English on another forum I frequent:
Engilsh summary from pages 214-215:
Novodels are copies of old Russain coins which were manufactured by mints for over 200 years. The majority of them come from the St.Petersburg mint (18th and 19th c) and the Ekaterinburg mint (19 c). It is also possible that Moscow mint took part in their manufacture during the 18th c. The manufacture of Novodels arose from the legalized practice of making medals to order. In St. Petersburg, this was common immediately after the mint started work again in 1738. In the same way, as the cracked medal dies were replaced by new ones, a small number of coin dies were recopied and kept in store in anticipation of fresh orders.
In time this led to the appearance of various "hybrids": the more fanciful among them were manufactured illegally by workmen in the mint, who had access to the dies. The Novodels had some weak points as far as their technical aspects were concerned (dimensions, weight, metal, standard, edges). As a rule, edging instruments did not survive.
It is possible to divide Novodels into the following groups (not counting the "hybrid" combination):
1. Later stamping with authentic dies
2. Stamping with copies of dies
3. Re-stamping with dies cut from previously issued coins, or even from their reproductions in books
4. Copying of coins which were produced by mints other than the one involved
5. Striking with "borrowed" dies
6. The manufacture of coins which did not exist before (fantasy issues)
A great many die-copies of all types were destroyed in the St.Petersburg circa 1840, but since then there were two huge issues of novodels in Ekaterinburg, which included coins from other mints as well. Perhaps one of the first "invented" novodel is a denga of Peter the Great, bearing a Latin inscription and dating from 1700. The Manufacture of novodels coins was officially prohibited in the 1870s.
Under almost all circumstances, Novodels were not struck in the year they were/are dated. Some were struck as many as 200 years later than dated. Most Russian collectors (i.e., collectors in Russia) do not collect Novodels, but they have become very popular outside of Russia, and thus prices are strong when they come up for sale.
Hope this clarifies a little -- and sorry to derail this thread off into "Novodel" land...

The gold issue is an iconic rarity, with perhaps half a dozen specimens known.
18 months ago, I didn't even know that silver trial pieces existed. Now, I understand that there are two pieces known. This is the second, which just surfaced after generations in hiding.

Andy, did you sell your NY flat to buy it? Superb, but the 2 escudos is great too, no? Isn't it a 2 escudos (from the E next to the tree)? Because the color has me all mixed up.
PS: For such a tremendous rarity, Andy, the least you could do is contact Mark (Goodman) to image it properly, I'll pay the fees.
Provided I'll have the right to post it in my webpage and pass it as mine and/or accept unethical proposals for sale. My usual commission.

Here are a few highlights from my collecting year. Happy holidays to all, Brandon
==========================================
In January, I went to the FUN show in Orlando. I found a really nice example of the 1854 halfpenny Upper Canada provincial token in the case of John Kraljevich. I also bought another USA token from him as well, but this one is truly special.
In March, I was very excited to add an 1898 matte proof example of the L. Oscar Roty "Semeuse" (Sower) design to my small collection of the type. This was an eBay purchase, and I was delighted when it arrived.
In April, I purchased a very nice example of a Conder token from a Heritage Auction. I know, it's not a horse -- but it's one of my favorite Conder designs, and this one has some great luster and pristine surfaces, just like I like them.
In July, I purchased this highly detailed Conder token in another Heritage Auction. I really love the detail of the church and tower.
In mid-September, I found a very nice toned example of a German Mark -- in uber-high grade / preservation. Again, a Heritage Auction.
In early November, I purchased this little sixpence proof from Atlas. I'm a big fan of Kruger-Gray coin designs, and the acorn reverse is very appealing to my eye.
And, finally, just 2 weeks ago -- I bid up a sixpence that I just had to have in a Heritage Auction. This is a part of my small "toned Vicky" collection, and it glows in hand. I can't say enough about how happy I am with this one -- she arrived today, and knocked my socks off. You can tell she's pretty in the HA images, but she absolutely beams under the camera lens.

EVP- very fond of the 1641 Augsburg taler, and I believe I've publicly admired your Cromwell and Aethelstan pieces previously. They're certainly familiar.
As is Boosibri's amazingly toned C.A.R. 2-escudo piece.
I remember Swampboy's German "milk & butter" token and brg5856's Herefordshire Conder and George V 6d as well. Don't remember his toned Victoria 6d in the OGH, but it's a beauty.
Nap- it's nice to see the crazy flipover King John error penny again.
Wow to everybody. It's been quite a year for many of you!
My Lord, that stunning French jeton, stole my heart the very first time I saw it, but I was just lurking.... Heh. Also notable, that grandiose proof 3 cents. This box of 20 is a great idea for some people, (not everybody though), among which, definitely Rob.
Thanks, Dimitri. If you follow the link to the subthread on the Ragusa grosso, you'll see I credited you for the favor you did by being a shipping intermediary on that coin. (Too bad you didn't open it and peek before you forwarded it along. I wouldn't have minded.)
I wish I had seen two CNG auctions....Atlas and James Ricks, hit the jackpot a few days ago, by buying two raw gold Greek coins from 1876 ,both from a CNG auction. One was the 10 drs, very rare in choice unc and above, sold for $3K all complete at CNG, that was graded PCGS MS65 and was resold within a day of being posted at his site for $10K, no discount. As well as a 20 drs 1876, impossible to locate in MS grades, another CNG purchase at $2500 complete, that graded PCGS MS63 , finest in existence, and was sold for $6750 even faster than the 10 drachmai. Crisis you said?...
Z, this taler at 67 cracks me up. Not sure if you remember of a member here, JammimJ who used to sell a lot of stuff too, but he collected super high grades of 16th and 17th century German States, only his were minors, I've never seen another 67 taler in my whole life, but his coins still made us look at them with awe back then, given their age and 67-68 grades. They probably came from Karl Stephens mostly. I remember your iphone image too, that had somehow captured both luster and color very well. What an amazing find, there will be VERY spirited bidding if you ever decide to part with it.
Just a few here to share from 2015 - none that match some of the high end eye candy above in terms of rarity or price of which I am totally mesmerized by...wow!
My "you really suck awards" go to the following in no order, b/c I felt like it...and if Steve Harvey can do it so can I.......are as follows;
Shmeagle sucks b/c I said so already - and will multiple times - so enuff said.
LordMarc sucks b/c of his chariot .
Dimitri sucks b/c of his Crete gem which is awesome.
2K sucks b/c of his gorgous 1761 8R
EVP double sucks b/c of his out of this world Tuscany newp, and his Cromwell.
Boosibri sucks b/c of his eye 'n sight altering 1846 2 Escudos.
MercuryDimeGuy sucks b/c he just does!
Andy REALLY sucks big time but you knew that already...
Brandon (brg) sucks b/c he had the chutzpah to show off his 1914 Mark in MS68, and a 1899 6 Pence to die for.
JCM - sucks obviously, this time for his British shilling in 64+
Zohar, Zohar, Zohar - Z sucks multiple times for....dunno where to begin so he just sucks b/c I say so!
I know I missed some - sorry - Just wanted to say you guys have good eyes and most of these all here are really special. You should stay away from NYINC imho as I foresee some becoming penniless or homeless

JamminJ is indeed a "forum legend" who I know was very much involved in the forum years back with high end material. Brent you have been very disciplined and that is a compliment. Having seen 2 of these in hand, I will attest to their consistent "look" in terms of eye appeal. The set has grown nice and steady.

Bidask sucks for sure b/c I love that Vietnam 7 Tien, wow!
WorldCoinGuy sucks b/c his Mainz pc is totally awesome - look at the details and the stunning EA!
Nick219 sucks b/c of that upcoming wedding - no other reason for now
Nap sucks b/c he posted stuff I admit I have no clue about - so he gets a medieval suck.
rwyarmch..well basically ditto to Nap except not medieval, but his 1117 is actually cool.
JamminJ is indeed a "forum legend" who I know was very much involved in the forum years back with high end material. He really got me going by offering up a few of his HRE Talers when he saw my initial posts within the theme. Not only is he a very friendly and knowledgeable person, but also fair in pricing and approach in shipping these to me prior to payment/purchase. That took some trust as I was not a frequent visitor which I appreciated.
Thank you for the kind words.

I still own this coin as well...
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
