If your note to self is serious, see if Bill Fivaz still teaches at ANA seminars. I took advanced grading several years ago and Bill handled a couple of special sessions including grading Buffs. One of best lessons ever.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

From that scan, that looks like a Ch BU all day long.
Do you have other scans ?
I can deal with a 58 but truly feel it was a CH BU coin!! It's going to CAC for an opinion!! Here's a couple more:
If ya look real close you can see just a bit of rub on the hipbone and flank. I agree sometime, when ya come across a weakly struck buff this area will also be a bit flat. This is where ya gotta tilt the coin to and fro and look for rub or a break in the luster. Buffs are very tough to grade. Congrats on a beautiful Buff at any grade.
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
Buffs are tuff to grade...I have trouble telling weak strike from minor wear also. That buff grading class sounds like it would be beneficial for me! It is one of my favorite series as the classic design is pure mid century americana IMO. BTW I would have thought those coins were MS...nice pickups regardless and thanks for posting!
The reverse betrayed you. There is rub back there, and the AU-58 grade is brutally honest.
When you are looking for a top POP item, don't expect any gifts.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have to agree, just what is happening with the rim/edge near the tail?
PICKY? No argument there. Before they started grading Jefferson nickels, I had high hopes PCGS would be as strict with the details of the Jefferson nickel as they did with Buffalo nickels. But now, we have scores of collectors with collections filled with defective, mushy coins. How a coin can sustain a MS67 grade while there are details completely missing in the strike..... Early on, I use to think there was a double standard taking place, but locating EDS (early die state) Jefferson nickels has proven to be a near impossible endeavor for many dates early in the series, for me anyway. I may have found one satisfying example of a date but locating a second coin with equal or better qualities.......well, I haven't been searching as much as I did in the early days. In fact, I have parted with a few coins..........what was the point of this post?
Nice coin you have but there are likely some worn areas somewhere you're not seeing.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
