First look: my growing Numismatic Curiosities showcase

Hi gang, it was time for me to image most of this set I've been working on with my son over the past couple years. The rules for this showcase are simple: we both must agree that a coin is cool for a specific reason and then we decide on the ideal piece to add to the collection. Some coins have historic value, some are just plain cool looking, but each one has a story to tell for why it exists, or why its existence was short-lived.



Anyhow, we have added a few pieces in recent months that haven't been sent to the sticker companies yet, which is our other criteria -- that each coin must have a sticker. Hey, it's a hobby, so do as you like -- right?



Here's most of the Numismatic Curiosities showcase, in chronological order. We only have 1 more item to image, which I'll get to another day.




PS. I might send in the Fugio for Phil to image/TrueView. The slab is really scuffed up and causes the lighting to be weird, it's also seated strangely in the slab, so I might just send for re-holdering and TV as I can't really get a great image of the Fugio as is...

Wow is all I could think! That is one nice collection. I went back through a 2nd and 3rd time to pick a favorite and guess what, couldn't do it. They're all killer.

Awesome idea. Very similar to what I aspire to with my own "Eclectic Box of 20", except your eclectic set is obviously being done on a bigger budget than mine, and has the added blessing of your considerable photographic skill.



I am jealous of the ancient Greek gold (that's a threshold I still haven't crossed, though I may acquire one of the tiny electrum pieces before too long.)



That toned O/C Lincoln is amazing. So is the Feuchtwanger cent.

lordmarcovan -- interesting that you focused on these two, as strange as this might sound (but maybe not to some), while this is a diverse gathering of coins, if you asked me my favorite -- it's the inexpensive (in context) off-center Lincoln. The in-hand look/colors are amazing and haven't changed in nearly 8 years (we've owned this coin at least that long). Countless times we've pared down the collection, and this one always survived. It's hard to look at the coin for only 5 seconds, or so, it will require at least a second and third look. This is a coin we categorized as "unsellable"



Thank you all for your kind words. I've been meaning to finalize imaging and matting all the coins, and in the last few days finally worked up the motivation/inspiration to do it.



I still have to image and send in for grading the medal I purchased on Friday, which will be a part of this collection, but I cannot image it yet as the medal is about 1/16" too big to fit into the frame of my 180mm Macro Lens on a copy stand. I bought a new (used, but new to me) Canon 100mm macro lens this weekend. It's coming on Wednesday, so I'll image the medal at that time and post some pics.

PS. The Feuchtwanger was bought right here on the BST in an NGC 64 holder, it was hand selected by its original owner for PQ quality, which was confirmed when I received it. It was clearly superior for the grade, crossed, and then CAC'd thereafter.

I just imaged the medal I was referring to...new lens came in the mail today and I took it for a ride! It's sandwiched in between the 1837 and 1875.



I will send the medal for PCGS grading with my next batch...

Updated with images of two new medals (not graded/encapsulated by PCGS yet), and the 1917 T1 SLQ and the 1913 T1 Buffalo I posted earlier this/last month, both got CAC stickers now.


My next item of hunting, a Flipover Double Strike error, where the obverse is fully struck, and has a smaller reverse imprint onto the full obverse. If anyone knows of where I can find one, help me out

If I had to pick a favorite out of the group it would be the 1917 SLQ. Even though I'm not a fan of the series it has a perfect look to it.
