NEN has a $50 pan-pac octagonal NGC unc details.

You have to own it, one way or another: Keep it improperly cleaned/nicked or pocket piece it down to a legit XF+?

Personally I would pocket piece it. Have two in my pocket tonight....it works and just takes time. But the cleaning can't be too deep.

Unless the cleaning was downright atrocious (it doesn't seem so) t'd resubmit it once or twice.

You could get that to a legit AU with some Deller's and some pocket rub I would think.

You have TWO Pan-Pac octagonal fifties in your pocket tonight?

Wow, those must be some pretty deep pockets! image

I only have one, but I keep it in the same pocket with my Gobrecht dollar pocket piece.

I keep the Stella in the same pocket with my keys.

Xg 45 would make no sense for this piece. These did not circulate. I see Marks on the rims that make it look like it was in jewelry at some point. It's a cool coin but I would look for a better example.

Is this the coin that Jeff Garrett tried to sell Rick on PawnStars last week? Surprised I haven't seen a thread about that episode, it featured a lot of video at the FUN show.

Deller's Darkener is for use on nickels and won't work on gold or silver coins.

Agree. It's too heavy for a pocket piece and with the corners you'd have to be careful not to hurt yourself. Also, it'll wear a hole in your pocket.

It is simply a problem coin. The problem isn't going to get better. Don't make someone else's problem your problem.

First thing that I thought of when I read Mark's comment...your pants are going to be baggy because you emptied your wallet on a problematic coin.

Those rim cuts look like they would be easy to repair by someone who knows what they are doing such as Allen Stockton.

Would you buy it at $10k? I mean there is a supply and demand curve....Wouldn't touch at that price however.

I'd buy it at $10,000 in a heartbeat. NEN is asking close to $50,000 though.

I don't see anything getting those nicks out. And I don't make myself a target by ever carry that much of value in my pockets.

I would not touch it. On a coin/slug like that I would rather own a cleaned unc than a worn (artificially) piece.... AW..... artificial wear, no thanks!

Me too. It would be a bargain at $10k IMO.

Agree - should be easy to repair. Nice option vs. keeping it as is or wearing it down. I would never wear that down to XF+. That would be a huge disservice to the community.

I would take it at melt.... and keep it as is.... Cheers, RickO

No, my point is at what point would the coin find a buyer? Methinks 25k would still be a decent price. IMO, the nicks aren't that bad but worse than 50k!

More accurately, there's a price and demand curve. The supply of this particular coin is one.

It's tough to value "problem" coins such as this. What's a fair net grade?

Of course we'd all buy it "at melt", and most of us at $10k, but so far, no takers at $50k

    For reference, price guide has

    VF30= $43k, EF40= $46k, AU50= $50k, AU55= $55k, MS60=59.5k

A dream coin in any grade for most collectors, no way this can rationally "net" lower than VF, could it?
