1. Different venue - Stacks - a major auction house with an Internet connection.
2. I don't think that coin is that beautiful. Yes, it's got color, but it does not turn me on that much, although I have admit that I'm not a color person.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
That does not look like a spectacular toner to me. I don't know the market all that well or which dates are the toughest to find with toning etc but that one does not look like one I would go after. Disclaimer: I have not seen it in hand.
My guess is that the first time it sold there were two people that REALLY wanted it for some reason and the second time it actually sold for what it is worth as determined by the market.

The venue matters none in this case since we have seen plenty of monster toners go for crazy prices at Great Collections. This coin just isn't the quality that is bringing in the big bucks these days.

Well stated and a good point.

I agree. It has decent color but not a monster.

You probably would have fared better by consigning the coin to eBay seller greattoning. At least he has an established following for toned dollars, and he knows how to photograph them to best portray the pattern and color effectively. With GC, your coin literally got lost in the shuffle of widgets. And conversely, you shoulda just let somebody outbid you 4 years ago at Stacks.
CW Trends for an MS65 1899-O Dollar is $155. I view toned vs brilliant as a preference not necessarily paying a monstrous big premium for.
In the first instance the coin went for well over what it was worth, that person was the end user until taking a huge loss now.
Frankly, I do not see it as more than a $200 - $225 coin. Best of luck to the buyer; paying big premiums on toners is risky. If you think I am joking I encourage you to shop these around the bourse at a show. Many will simply pull out their blue-sheets.
There is no doubt monster toners can go for insane prices, but you have to find that special buyer. What that guy paid the first time would buy a nice slabbed $20 Double Eagle today, unbelievable. What was he thinking.....Was it jut "I gotta have it" syndrome or did he think it would tripple lol.
The coin was way overpriced, in my opinion, at $1,495 that it sold for at Stacks. At GreatCollections, the coin seems more appropriately priced, though still a bit on the high side. It looks more like a $200 to $225 coin, but I also agree the coin is a solid MS64, not MS65. This is all based on the pictures. In person, it could be a solid MS65.
It was part of the "Rainbow Collection" at a major auction 4 yrs ago. That no doubt drew in a lot of specialists who must have assumed these were some of the finest rainbows. I'd also say the market was a lot stronger (gold and silver especially) 4 years ago. All that liquidity continued to help the coin market.

Doesn't look like a 65 to me and 'toners' are on thin ice these days with the grading companies (possible 'details' grade).

What do you mean by, on thin ice?

The jumbo GC pics don't sugar coat any marks on the obverse and really show it for what it is.
As you sure see a lot more traffic then in the glamour shot at SB.

In this case, the original was overpriced. The second reflects a much more realistic view of the value of the coin.
I love toners . . . this one is fine, but not at a huge level . . . . . .

But I don't think it's a 65 but a 63.
I'll leave the toning up to you guys though.
any kind of tarnish anyway... Cheers, RickO
You guys are too kind. That dollar is a pig. Raw its $40. Way too many hits and lousy color.
