I would agree with your assessment Monte. Anyone want to take a guess on the grades of these two cards? I will post results tonight.

    Top Ryan...an 8.5

    Bottom Ryan...a 7.

Thank you for the note on the Mantle rookie. I have not tried to review it yet, but might do it the next time I am at either Fanattics or the National. No real downside, and if it did bump to a 3.5 or a 4 by some chance it would definitely increase in value and be worth the review.

On the Ryan cards here they are like I said I would list this evening.

Wow...my eyes are bad! Corner wear is difficult to see in a scan...I assume that is the difference here.

Monte - I don't honestly know what is wrong with the card nor do some folks who are much smarter than I am when it comes to cards. I was very happy to acquire the card a few months back, and while I still want an 8 this one looks like an 8/8.5 in every aspect.

That is how I graded the Ryan RC from the scan...

I've used a Sooper Dooper Magnifier that I got from a box of cereal to look for a wrinkle on that Ryan, but I can't see anything on the front surface that would indicate such, at least from that scan. Maybe the reverse has something technically wrong. They typically knock down a card to 5 or 5.5 because of some kind of barely, but noticeable problem. I have an otherwise virtually flawless Killebrew rookie in my collection which graded a 5 due to a raised area on the front which I've heard some folks refer to as a "worm". Look for one of those.

    Someone here buy that 5.5?

    Nice!

Glad you are happy with it, sonsof/kc

The back was a tad o/c, but certainly a killer card for the grade.
  • That's really a nice Ryan 5.5 KC. I would trade my PSA 6 Ryan for that 5.5, and I really like my PSA 6. That 5.5 is just that eye appealing.

Thank you for the note Matt, and the Ryan 5.5 has become one of the favorite cards in my collection. Probably because it presents like a card 3 grades higher but without the price tag. Will be very hard to get rid of it. I still need to grab a nice 8 that is centered, but want to complete my run of Mantles first and then go after other cards/players.

Sold a couple of Mantle's in AC from 1956 and got one bumped, and was able to pick up another one last week to add to the run. I remember in this thread where last year we were talking about this card in the $5-6k range image

Felt like I needed to find a nice PSA 8 for the run despite having a very nice 6.5 of the 56 Mantle. Going to cut a few cards loose in the next week or so (see below) so I can focus on finishing out the rest of the 60's I need like 1962, 1965, and 1966.

Thank you Matt. Was not planning on getting one right away after I sold mine since I had a placeholder in my run with a nice PSA 6.5, but this one looked very strong and was as nice of an 8 as I have seen in a long time. I figure the owner had tried to bump it in the past, but might attempt to do so in the near future - cannot hurt to try. Hard part is getting rid of some stuff now to grab some other cards I need!

KC, belz and begsu...like you guys at the time, I def paid a premium for each Mantle. Some way above high VCP. But looking back Im glad I did. But it did hurt then. I don't think we hit the balance between supply and demand quite yet. $12.5 is at my limit or above. Realistically, if not for the 2 print-dots, the 1 obvious one at the center top, Im sure I could rationalize paying that amount. It'll be interesting in a year from now if we'll all be regretting not paying 12k for an 8.

do they have a white back version of the 1956 ?

Yes. In checking VCP they show that one PSA 8 sold a while back, and a PSA 7 sold this summer for $5100. No PSA 9's or 10's have ever been graded. Very tough card to find. I sold a PSA 4 that was a sweet card last year, and goofed up in selling it - forgot it was a white back like a goof image

I think the rising tide will lift all Mantles. But lets throw out the 52. The 56 is huge due to its triple crown season, aesthetics, and rarity. Next, I think the 53 is gorgeous. In fact, I prefer its looks over the 52 easily. It still has room. And yes, the '60 would def be next. Its very popular and a beautiful card. IMHO, those are the big 3 (or 4).

Interesting to see a year later you were spot on with your call on these cards. You staed earlier in the thread that this card would nit surprise you priced at $12k - checking eBay these days all 1956 8's are listed for $12-15k looks like you were right. Also, not a bad call on the 1960's running up in price from $3k to over $5k in one year.
