why would someone sell a 52 topps set and replace them with auto rookies? obviously the latter is not the better investment lol.

begsu...thanks and nice try...youre not getting that one either. image

thanks for the kind words guys, yes it is my 9...since probably spring or summer.

I def realize grading is subjective. Since concentrating on 8, 9s and 10s lately, Im starting to see and appreciate the science behind it and now the differences between the numbers. In general. Yes, you're always going to get outliers and can argue some either way. But now I think I'm honing my eye to discern the differences. That said, Ive grown to appreciate this 9 and what made it a 9 more and more. Oh, and the top corners are sharp 90 degrees. They look warped either from the case or the scan.

You better quit promoting your PSA 9 card on here or another poster will come after you image
Also, don't ever try to sell it EVER? Not allowed in collecting. Once you buy it you keep it for eternity!

Am I the only person that looks at that 9 and I feel better about myself, and everything around me? What a feel good thing to look at...and no I'm not on drugs.

It is interesting to see the prices of the PSA 8 version of the '56 appreciate but the PSA 8.5 has plateaued. I purchased this card in June. A few days later another PSA 8.5 went up for sale on eBay for a slight bump and it didn't sell for months. It was recently removed. Not sure if it was a private sale or if the seller decided to hold on to it for now.

Dberk - the 56 in an 8.5 you mentioned is still available. The seller pulled it down (Craig - Quality Cards) since he is out of town, but it will probably be back up next week. Interesting dynamic in that they are so scare and rare to find, and past history of Ebay and private sales would support his $17k+ price tag; however, nobody has pulled the trigger on it. I know that I want another one in an 8.5, but not sure what price I would pay for one now - got very lucky when I picked mine up. At the time it was a strong price but very fair price based on the provenance of the card and condition, and glad I spent the money to get it. Here she is below.

Begsu - I saw that PSA 11 on eBay. The seller had 32% positive feedback and never sold a sports card before. They did claim that they randomly found it in their neighbor's attic though.

KC - When I purchased my '56 Mantle there was a lot of competition at the end of the auction. Shortly after Craig from Quality Cards posted his example on eBay for a reasonable bump up from what I paid. I suspected shilling with my auction because nobody purchased the card from Craig over the following months. If I didn't win the auction for my card I would have looked into Craig's card which is why I questioned the potential "buyers" that were bidding against me. If these "buyers" were willing to pay X for the '56 Mantle why wouldn't they consider paying X + $299?

    LMAO x3

KC..awesome. I was actually gonna say that Im not happy with the card. I see an imperfection, maybe a stain, don't like 56's anymore, Mantles overrated.....oops now I'm trying to destroy the market, convince people to sell and bring down prices so I can buy more.....u guys are on to me....cant win

....guess i have to secretly buy a card, hide it in the back of the closet and peak at it when the familys away...then put it in my funeral suit so no ever knows of it including the market.

Belz.....exactly!!!...thats the way I feel over some of these cards. I posted a 72 fisk rook i just love cuz of the centering...can just stare at it all day with a smile...weird but innocent enough....think we all kindred brothers. The 9 makes me happy image

begsu....haaa...awesome...Well played sir!.....pushing the pot towards you. I know when I'm beat....you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar

That is great - roflmao. You realize someone might think that is real on here and make you an offer. If I had an alias account I would do it. Sure some in this thread already do so might want to keep your PM box open.

Begsu - Totally agree regarding the '53 tops Mantle. My eyes go directly to that lower left corner. If it is red I am willing to overlook other flaws.

Seebelow - You certainly did see his 8 and raise it to a 9. That card definitely deserves the grade. Wow!

You received a gold medal for kissing everyone's arce lol.

The Mantle 8 for $12.5k has been taken down. Possibly sold. Probably not. I have a feeling, like that '52 stain, they may not have appreciated the two spots. And is off to an AH.
.....and again, great card centering, whiteness etc...except for....which is glaring to me as the stain is on the '52

There seem to have been quite a few more 56's posted for sale. Would love to see some other ones posted here.

Quit hyping your own card...BTW I'll give you 14k for your '56 psa 8.

Warriors8....Have you been here before? Something seems very familiar and rings a bell. Maybe we've bought or sold from each other.

If not, then welcome aboard. Its a great place to discuss and share.

And I assure you I'm still buying (unfort) as are most that have posted here. I even have doubles i should sell but not going to.

Ive only sold 1 or 2 mantles ever. and that was under Jeff's hypnotic spell and allure that none of us can escape....which i quickly replaced.

big hint: something tells me we'll see a photo hosting account created rather quickly or some exorbitant "noble" explanation about why he wont.

SOLD! For $14k I will fly to your home city and deliver it to you! Doubles? You need to sell those or at least post them and hype them so we can get into a bidding frenzy on the wrong board image

When I was a kid growing up in the early 80s my friends and I mostly collected cards that we pulled from packs. One kid claimed that he had all of these great vintage cards but we couldn't see them because they were locked in a closet. Perhaps Warriors8 has all of his cards locked in a closet?

dberk...you hit it on the head...the key words are "kid" and "grow up"..theres probably an undiscoverd wagner and a mantle psa 10 in locked in there. Along with a batman and superman #1.

Don't cheat the rest of us. If you've got some big boy cards, please share. That's what this forum is about. I've seem some pretty nice cardboard on this board and would love to see more. Sharing is the most enjoyable part of this board. It can't just all be about derailing threads. There should be some level of constructive contribution...or what's the point? This thread has largely become akin to the highway wreck that you just can't help but watch. Sad...but true.

how about we all agree to share some "big boy cards" we have? No matter what the level of bigness they are....it really is fun to share and stare at these little rectangles of cardboard...who else would understand that except us here.

Was searching Mantle card threads and found this one, and curious as to how everyone is doing on their Mantle cards/runs - See Below, dberk, and Begsu had some nice ones in this thread. Any recent pickups?
  • PWCC just ended a '56 PSA 8 auction minutes ago at $10,400. This card will be at $15,000 within two years.

So glad i finally was able to pick one up earlier this year.
  • Nice thread. I am still hunting for a Mantle, either a 56 or 51.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.
