Which 1941-D do you like better?

ShadyDaveShadyDave Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭✭✭
The 2 1941-D examples I am choosing between

I'm trying to decide which one I want to keep which to get rid of. Both look like they are accurately graded by PCGS, one blast white and one with toning. Do you think the toned example is distracting, takes away from the coin or adds character? Both examples would fit into my collection of Mercury Dimes as I have toned and blast white examples!

Feel free to share your opinion to hep me decide which to let another collector enjoy.

Thanks-
David

I like both, but many like white coins which can also bring more money when sold. Based on that info the second coin would be the one.
Personally I would keep the first one; even though, I recommended the second.

I'm surprised the second one was an MS 66. It looks scruffy to me. The first one is high for the grade IMO.

The least crusty of the two, the second example. When looking at a common coin in a common grade I would select the
example that is most pleasing to the most people since you will need to sell it one day. The crust/toning/tarnish on
the first example would not be acceptable to a lot of people.

Be sure to check them for the DDO. Look for the split in the 9 of the date and the doubling on the bottom of
the U and S in TRUST.

    Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice and replies! Looks like people think that the less toned example is more appealing and will be easier to unload, so that one will be my keeper.

Keyman- Thanks for the tip on the variety. I'm a few glasses of wine deep, so I'll pull the loupe out tomorrow and see if either of these might be the DDO you mentioned. I'll update the thread when I take a look.

    #2 without much thought.

When it comes to common date mercs there are two kinds, blast white, or otherwise very colorful/attractive. Anything else should be an automatic pass.

I like #2 better and not because it's white but only because I don't find the toning of #1 to be very attractive.

I usually bend toward original toning. . .but in this case. . . I like the white coin.

The toning isn't really very attractive on the first one, so I would choose the second one.

In some ways I like #1 better because "It's screaming original." The trouble is a lot of collectors don't like the spotty toning. They would prefer the second one, which may or may not have been dipped at some point. From the monetary perspective, I'd keep #2.

Yes, the white one for me, too. The toning on the other is unattractive.

Toning unattractive on #1. Keep the white one.
