Don't recognise that Mint mark at all. At least that part's fake IMO. Notice the machine doubling?

  • I vote fake

Appears to be a very crudely manufactured porous planchet likely cast fake (probably of Chinese origin).

The date and mintmark are both wrong and are not genuine.

I wonder why someone would take the time to make a counterfeit common date 1885-O Morgan Dollar, unless they're trying to pass some type of non-precious pot metal for silver.

No answer really fits. The thing is a piece of crap, the the "usually" does not apply to the 19th century U.S. Mint system.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Obvious fake but I still find it very interesting. It looks like there is a Class II doubled die onthe obverse with multiple notched serifs toward the rim on PLURIBUS. It also looks like a minor class V doubled die reverse with a pivot around K-2 and counterclockwise rotation on ONE DOLAR and UNITED. I bet that would be a fun one to study in the hand.

glad someone else notice and commented. image

ive seen cracks, breaks, polishing, clashing, doubling, collar clashing, tilted collars, die incest (sometimes across type lol) and more on modern fakes and im sure there is more that ive not seen.

for those of you not familiar with what i just stated, TAKE NOTE!

On a fake quality scale of 1-10 I give that a 2, because I have to leave room for the chance that something even worse is out there.
    When in doubt, don't.

This coin is clearly not genuine for all of the reasons stated earlier.
