How often do you buy a coin you don't need but just to buy a coin?

I have, way too many times.

Sometimes you can be looking for certain coins but come across something you wouldn't normally buy, but you're in a coin buying mood so you get it.

Later I'll think why did I buy that? but for the most part it is a cool coin otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

Edit - since the question is poised to fellow addicts, I'll change it to "How often" instead of "Have you ever"

Absolutely! I've been without a collecting direction for about 2 years now. Most all my nice album sets are complete, my type set is finished aside from occasional upgrades...

I have never purchased a coin that I truly needed. Collecting is a luxury pastime, and utterly incomprehensible to many of the world's impoverished citizens.

However, in response to your actual question, I sometimes make a courtesy purchase for taking up some of a B&M owner's time. I got over buying something for the sake of buying something long ago.

I only search for coins that I need for my collection. By doing this, I'm not tempted to spend money on items outside of my focus.

Not since I was a kid back in the 50's as I do not fall in love with the coins I buy.
I buy only what I can make a profit on before i die which could be at any time at my age.
It is more fun that way for me but I do understand others ideas on this as even I had fun doing it as a kid.

How does one answer the question: HOW OFTEN ?

    1) Too often
    2) Very often
    3) More often
    4) As often
    5) So often

The 81 Type 2 SBA. So boring I think I only looked at it once. Boy, prices one those took a dump, too. They used to run $250-$300 and now you can get them for around $125 in PCGS PR69.

I buy for collectors. The rest of the world doesn't have to like it. It's usually the dealers who want it.

The last time I succumbed to this, I bought these two coins.

    imageimage

I have long admired the Flying Eagle cent, and this one was so nice I could not resist. It was graded MS-65 and priced at Gray Sheet bid.

This 1909 Plain Lincoln is a really nice example of the Matte Proof. It was graded PR-66, R&B and looked mostly red to me. It bought as a reference piece to help me spot Matte Proofs in the furture. This too was priced at Gray Sheet type numbers. People say the market is weak, and these coins kind of prove it.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Never. Everything I buy for me is expensive. So I don't buy much and try to make every purchase count. I have made a mistake from time to time re my purchases, but if I don't need a coin, it will never be in my collection.

If a dealer turns down what he doesn't need, he won't have much to sell collectors in need. ( I just need the OP to see it from this perspective)
