1792 half-dismes

I'm watching a re-run episode of Castle, and I just saw Castle and Beckett discover a large quantity of 1792 half-disme specimens. It's too bad that the one specimen they showed looked like a cast forgery.

Still, pretty cool episode (many scenes like the National Treasure movies) and Beckett is easy on the eyes.

I liked that show when it first came out. Never saw that episode though.

So I am working on a book about 1792 coinage, and the chapter "The Half Disme in Popular Culture" contains a deconstruction of the Castle episode (which, on the whole, is positive).

Is there an actual legend about a horde of them?

If there is, I've never heard it.

With an estimated survival of 325 pieces out of an estimated mintage of 1,500, the survival rate is quite high for a coin of that era. Still these were the first of their kind, and since the face value was low, more were saved.

Of course you must remember that lot of those survivors are "culls." By that I mean that many have bent, holed or otherwise damaged and can only be given net grades at best.
