Out of all cards from the Gong magazines in 1981 and 1982 submitted so far of 18 only two have achieved a grade higher than a PSA 6. I was successful in both those submissions but this is my best hit, a 1981 Gong Ric Flair. While there are other trading cards earlier that are oversized and cooler cards like the All Stars, this is a tough one in a decent grade. I've given up on buying high prices for magazines as these are on thin stock and creases are very common. I thought this card deserved to be on the best Ric Flair thread on the net.

That Randy Couture card is now a monster for MMA fans. It is very tough to acquire so you have a winner there.

That's a heck of a card. And like you said, this is probably the best Ric Flair thread online. Dpeck definitely achieved something I could only dream of with one of my favorite wrestlers of all time.
Dpeck, what a great story, thank you for sharing. I think it's important to take chances, leaps of faith, be outgoing, etc... or you can miss out on so much.
As a child I watched and attended a lot of wrestling in the late 70's and early 80's. I grew disinterested after Andre the Giant lost in WrestleMania but I digress. One of my greatest memories was from the early 80's live at the Capitol Center (MD) watching Snuka splash Bob Backlund from the top rope. Snuka then tried it again but this time from the top of the cage, if my memory serves me Backlund raised his knees, and Snuka landed on them. For some reason George the Animal Steel also stands out in my memories, that cat was crazy.

A guy I went to high school with, his aunt was Flair's second wife(who he was married to the longest). He was a few years older than me but I knew one of his friends. They used to get free tickets and go backstage when Flair was on the card when the old Southern wrestling circuit and later WCW came to town. Hope things work out ok for Ric here.

Was doing some research on Ric. Man, he didn't waste any time looking for his next wife. Listed below are his 4 wives and the dates he was married to each. Note that each time he got divorced, he was married the same year to his next wife:
Leslie Goodman - m. 1971–1983
Elizabeth Flair - m. 1983–2006
Tiffany VanDemark - m. 2006–2009
Jackie Beems - m. 2009–2014

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Don't know when exactly it was shot, but Ric intro'd the PGA Championship yesterday. Not sure what caught me off guard more -- watching that or reading about this today.
From his agent's Facebook page. Still very little details.
Update: Ric did have surgery today (not heart related) and am happy to report it was successful. Still a long road ahead so please keep sending prayers and positive energy the way of Ric, Charlotte, Megan, David, and Wendy.
Here's hoping for the best for the Nature Boy. His daughter Charlotte posted a message on social media so hopefully that's a sign things are turning in the right direction.
I have read the same thing where it was mainly digestive track stuff and not cardiac related, and he is going to have to rest for a while but should recover.
One of the best if not best ever with a mic in his hand along with Dusty, Stone Cold, and the Rock. "The stylin and profiling, jet flyin, limousine riding. Woo! Kiss stealing, wheeling dealing son of a gun!" Woo!!
I thought it was really well done. But I do think it could have been better. I think it easily could have been two hours. And it was a bit erratic, and all over the place. A little over an hour in, knowing there was only 30 minutes left, I didnt think they would touch on Reid. Then the whole Reid piece, along with his daughter, seemed rushed at the end. You'd also never know that David was ever in the business (maybe they wanted it that way?).
I think in my head I was thinking a typical documentary that followed a timeline format. And this was just a bit more all over the place.
That being said, I did like it a lot. I have seen every 30:30 ESPN has done, many of them numerous times, and they do a fantastic job.
I enjoyed it. I honestly think it could have been better. When they had the three TV commentators giving their thoughts on Flair and Hogan and how Flair missed out on the boom I thought that was very poorly done. Wrestling fans knew who Ric Flair was as he was the king pin of the NWA and all over the wrestling magazines and cable television. If you look at the professional wrestling rankings in 85 and 86 they had Flair #1.
It was really sad learning more details about Reid and how devastated the family was. The part where HHH tells the story of disclosing the drug test results to him and Ric being in denial was interesting. I total get that parents can be in denial but that was taking it to extremes.
It seems that many of the people featured had a negative tone to their comments. I am not sure if that was meant to show that Ric hurt people or they were just being honest. Both Shawn Michaels and Jim Ross didn't paint Ric in a very good light and I thought they were close.
I am not certain what to make of Hogan's comments. On the surface I know he knows Ric was a better in ring worker but from a stardom perspective no one from the 80's changed wrestling like Hulk did so I am not sure if he really thinks Ric was the greatest of all time. Hulk has been really trying to play the nice guy role of late so that may play a role in it.
I have watched quite a few of the 30 for 30's on Netflix and while I was naturally interested in the person and topic I think some of the others were actually better. That said I was excited to be watching a documentary on Flair and learning more about his life story. I think it is pretty clear to people that he really was a very selfish person along the way and hurt his family and didn't keep his word on many business dealings and cost a lot of people a lot of money. If you research many of the Flair lawsuits over the years they are pretty bad and really there is no defending his behavior. He was one of a kind that is for sure and while he may have been a poor role model in real life he brought a lot of entertainment to many and for that he will always be revered. I think his story is a harsh reminder of how much different things were before the internet and how much more humans could get away with. You could never pull off what he did today and I think that adds to the mystique of his persona. There will never be another Ric Flair that is for sure!
Appreciate the insight! I completely forgot to mention Hogan's comments above. I think my jaw was on the floor when he said that. I mean, everyone knows that Flair was a better wrestler, but for Hogan to admit it was pretty surprising to me.
I agree with it seeming to be a bit rushed and it seemed to cover a number of things that a lot of long-time wrestling fans already knew. However, I was captivated by the entire episode and was shocked by Hogan's comments.
I was a big wrestling fan in the late 70's and early 80's and used to go to the Boston Garden every couple of months to watch the matches. I will have to check this out when I get a chance.
I'm not a pro wrestling fan but I have an honest question.
Its pre determined who wins the matches, correct?
So how can you have a discussion over who was the best pro wrestler of all time
when the outcomes were not legitimate?

If you haven't watched wrestling or much of it I can see how one could ask this question. In ring wrestling is an art form that very few are really good at. There is so much that goes into a good wrestling match. The amount of stamina that it takes to go an hour under the hot lights in an action packed match is simply insane. To be able to get the crowd to believe that what is going on in the ring is real was something that the guys from the 70's and 80's took very seriously. There are loads of matches where you would say OMG are you sure this is predetermined. Today's wrestling is very different. One of the reasons that championships aren't taken very seriously in many cases is because someone determines who gets to wear the strap. That said talent is what drives those decisions. Flair was so great at taking punishment and making the crowd believe that he was really hurting and was destined to lose. I have watched a lot of wrestling and the number one thing is selling. If you watched the 30 for 30 they touch on this and show Ric screaming in agony. This is one of the things that really sets wrestlers apart. Flair has a famous technique that he and Greg Valentine would do and its a face plant on the mat. That takes tremendous skill to even try and pull it off. Trust me there is lots of bad wrestling where punches don't land and moves get botched and the ability to try and not focus on the fact that it is predetermined is impossible. I understand why the WWE came forward and said it wasn't real sport but I think that was the end of pro wrestling as we knew it. Aside from the ring work there is the gimick or persona and mic work. Once again there is a huge range of skill in this area. Some have it, most don't. Ric Flair had everyone believing he was rich, famous, tough, and could get any woman he wanted. It was magical.

Merry Christmas everyone and Merry Christmas from Old Saint Ric!
His agent has put out some serious sounding messages on the various social media sites.
It sounds like his heart issue is more serious than first thought.
This is definitely a developing story and hopefully for Ric he is going to be okay.
Just read that he has been hospitalized!!

On Saturday he went in and it sounded routine according to his agent. Sunday her social media posts sounded much more serious.

One source is saying he is in a medically induced coma. Not sure if that is accurate or not.
Checking EBAY his collectibles are moving already. A ton of sales in the past hour. This always happens when a legend dies.
