on one hand, i'm really not worried about getting them graded, per say. however i do like things nice, neat and organized. plus i already have my storage boxes ordered in bulk to fit slabbed cards.
as of now, my game plan has been going thru all the binders/boxes and start pulling out the cards that i remember well or spark a fond memory. been throwing those ones into card savers and into the "special" box.
once i've done that i will probably go thru w/ a fine tooth comb and see if there are any that are "gem" worthy, which there probably isn't. it'd be nice to just have 1 hit outta the collection, though. and know what that card has been thru and still remained gem after all these years.
will probably submit the "special" box cards, however and just request an "authentic", as I'm not worried about the grades on these cards at all. haven't checked into it, however I'm gonna ask/request if i can get them pedigreed, ie "dmitri young collection". i think that'd be cool. not sure if that "right" is only reserved for marquee collections or what, but will try my best to get that done. in fact, whether or not they will do it may ultimately depend whether or not i even send them in to begin with...
if they don't, my feelings will be hurt for 10 mins and then it's back to the drawing board...
This is a fantastic thread. I can only imagine the time it takes just to makes additions to this tread, with the great detail you are showing. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
be honest, was sweating it a lil bit. these were one of the main items I wanted to locate and passed over them the first time going thru the binder boxes...
pete rose basic set...
a true rookie was obviously never an option growing up, but looks like i'm also missing the '65 & '73...
might try and set up a trade for these 3 at some point so i can try and keep the childhood collection as authentic as possible and complete the set.
This is a great thread and nice to see the childhood memories flooding back. The 1984 Topps Strawberry RC was my favorite card growing up...thought I hit the jackpot when I landed two in the same cello pack! Keep the fun coming.
<< <i>The layout of those Rose cards is awesome! >>
+1. Great idea to put the '86 Topps Pete Rose Years card in the middle to anchor the page. Love it. >>
Definitely very cool.
Those 86 Topps cards show just how popular Pete Rose was at the time. I had to give away my 1985 Fleer Pete Rose to my older brother to complete his set and I was devastated. Haha.
thanks guys! was part of the reason i couldn't find them for a sec. I had all my pete rose/other cards in one of those topps binders, but since the entire 9 pocket pages weren't full and you could see the other cards behind them, I moved them to their own small binder for display purposes. guess I completely spaced and was freakin for a sec when they weren't in the topps binder!!
I tried to do the hank aaron topps series like that as well, but didn't get too far considering the budget i was on...
i immediately put the beer down, gathered my bearings and came in to secure her. a lil fisheye on the back above the "d" in outfield, but other than that...i would assume she is free of any type of alteration as she was probably acquired sometime in 85-86, i would imagine...
certainly hope they weren't trimming hendo's that early on, but I've been wrong before...

Does look trimmed when looking at the back scan but doesn't from the front. Looks more than 9 worthy on the front.
That's a beauty Bob. I think it could pull an 8.5 or 9 easy. Wouldn't it be something, though, if it got a 10. Talk about a HUGE score from the childhood collection
In the scan it looks trimmed....BUT it can appear so in scans where the card is curled or the cardsaver is curing the card on the scanner bed....which is probably the case here.
10 isn't even a reality, there's a slight knick on the left hand border near the bottom, but again...she may just end up in an "A" holder as previously discussed.

nah! liking the "a" holder more and more, now that I think about it...
got nothing to prove and don't need psa's opinion on these ones!
would like to hear what other 80 topps cards are tough though and share those...
I love this thread. Can't wait for more updates. I recently went through my (MUCH smaller) childhood collection. You had better taste than me. I think I only had one 50's card, ha!
been a lil while since i had some time to continue going thru the ol collection...my office furniture arrived along w/ the lil one's destination first birthday, so things have been a lil chaotic.
cut out a lil early today to go thru a box and found these iconic cards. not the best of shape, but I fell in love all over again...
also found this oddball...apparently it's a talking baseball card that was supposed to be played on a record player. don't really remember it, but looks pretty cool and in decent shape!
and I did find my 73 rose as well, which would leave me w/ the 65 and 63 rookie to complete the basic set. if anyone has one of these laying around and would contemplate a simple trade for these, lemme know. condition really isn't a concern. just shoot me who your favorite player is and i'll be on the lookout through out the rest of the dig:

Yep, I've got a '63 rose lying around. Hold on one sec, it's right under my '52 mantle and '33 ruth, they're all lying around together as a threesome.
Love your posts and the discoveries. Keep em coming!

That Henderson looks like a 9. Top left corner (can see from the back scan) is really the only serious think I can see but 9 for sure based off the scans provided.
had a few hours yesterday to sort thru some stuff and figured I'd add a few monumental cards growing up...
obviously jordan was huge. the fact that he switched over to baseball was also cool at the time, but the bigger card here for me
was the 87 canseco box bottom!
only had 1 convenience that was close, well 2 but don't tell mom as that second one was about a 1 hr trip each way. dad knew though!
donruss wasn't really big as far as distribution where i was...
well until 88, that is.
tons of topps and a pinch of fleer here and there.
well low and behold one day, the ol 66 got a box in. i would ride the ol bmx, complete w. pegs, up every day to the store when i saw the box, i mean everyday. i patiently waited until it got down to like 8 packs so I could just take the whole thing up to the counter and keep the box. keeping in mind, that i had to hold on to this $5 for what seemed like forever. no candy, no extra milk at school, nothing. and this was at the beginning of the 86 donruss craze, which was financially unattainable for me at that point. so this box bottom was my everything.
Keep the updates coming! I just finally caught up on all the posts from the past month in this one, some incredible cards from the childhood. My childhood cards were nowhere near as impressive.
Thanks for this thread, it is one of the best. I have a storage locker a few states away that I need to get into. A 5x5 filed with a ton of cards and books.
<< <i>Keep the updates coming! I just finally caught up on all the posts from the past month in this one, some incredible cards from the childhood. My childhood cards were nowhere near as impressive. >>
Same here. Love this thread. Found my childhood "investment" collection when I got back into cards. Lots of Hensley Meulens, Steve Decker and Tim Wallach rookies. Best card I had saved was an almost miscut 1985 Topps McGwire.
Edit: Doesn't look anything like his sigs I can find online, but was the only name that came to mind with the first name appearing to be 'Larry' and the last containing a double 't'.
Going with the Larry, double "t" theme, Larry Sutton possibly?

i think i missed something as my net54 acct has been blown up and i see a thread has disappeared. hope all is well and nothing got blown outta proportion over something so easily misconstrued.
edit: apparently his name is bob as well, which was really confusing for a sec.
also, there is a ton of stuff that I will not be keeping. similar to the detroit warehouse find.
w/ that being said...i don't necessarily feel there's a need to simply junk it.
most of this stuff is from the 86 - 94 era, w a few earlier years sprinkled through out. will leave a few nicer cards/willie mays cards/duplicates as "scores/finds".
does anyone know of any decent or worthwhile charities that could put this to good use or would even want it?
i'd take care of the shipping fees, however i'd like it to go to a institution that promotes the hobby for future generations.
i am at least another couple of months from being prepared to do this, but just thought i'd toss this out there.
so if anyone stumbles across this and knows of such a place, please send me info so that i may research!
One charity is Cards2kids.com but according to their web site they now only take 2009-2015 cards. If you have a good compost pile going the cards will be dirt in less than a year if you mix 'em in.

That's the one I recall seeing mentioned and makes sense that they're only interested in newer cards now.

don't think I've ever submitted an 80 topps card, do they come back MINSIZ often or frequently?
