so first of all props to my pops who has been lugging this stuff around since 1996 or so for me. being in the military, it's been to hawaii, atlanta, pinehurst and a few crap holes in between.
anyways, he's retired military and took a job w/ the faa and about to retire from that here shortly. we've been talking about handing it back over, now that he is starting to downsize. during this time, i've been relocating my business and building a new location that is minutes from the house w/ no downtown traffic. well construction is finally done and i've built a custom room solely for the purpose of storing my current collection + the childhood collection once it was turned over. well the past 2 weekends have consumed just that. I have a younger sister that is completing college and has made the move here as well.
so, here are a few pics of the transfer.
(fyi: it did not consume the entire truck. 80% was her furniture but the back 20% is the collection, plus the back of my yukon denali)
and the stuff that has still yet to be transferred:
now, i'd say 75% of this is cards, unopened, factory sets and such. there will be a ton of 80's crap, as i think i started collecting around 84 and hit the brakes around 94-95 or so. my dad kept going for a lil while after.
however, there will be a ton of 50's, 60's and 70's cards as well. i didn't just chase the griffeys, the gregg jeferries and frank thomas'. my dad helped me appreciate the aarons, the mantles, the mays' as well. there's also (or should be) a ton of signed bats, balls, becketts, slu's and years upon years of highly prized birthday and christmas gifts!
my goal is to sift through this stuff throughout the next year or so and share the findings. i do have a 1 year old, so don't want to take too much time away from him and please just bear in mind, that most of this was purchased on a kids allowance plus lawn cutting, snow shoveling and odd jobs on the side. there will be no 1974 dave winfields 9's OR 10's, but there will be tons of 4's that are 10's in my eyes! most of the cards will most likely be beaters, but there should be a few 86 jordans, 58 mantle that's signed and a few things of that nature that i remember vividly. i also remember a 54 koufax that i spent $25 on back in the day which was a huge purchase for me...while unloading i found some of my super fresh artwork drawings that i drew onto the card boxes themselves that literally made me laugh out loud. will take a few pics there and share during the journey as well.
anyways, hopefully it doesn't bore anyone too much and will hopefully get to the 1st couple of boxes this week as i am still waiting on our conference table to arrive for plenty of room to spread out and reorganize!

I'm looking forward to finding out what's in those boxes. This could be an all-time great thread
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
WOW, just the good times that you will relive going thru those boxes is worth it! Hope those Jordans and that signed MICK are in decent shape!
Enjoy and show us as much as you can.
Thanks for sharing.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Strange question (I focus on odd stuff): is the card room at your house or your business?
i regretfully took pics after all that stuff was unloaded, however it was 98° at 4:00pm on a friday and in no way was gonna reload it all back into the van just for a pic.
so all of the stuff in the metal shelved rooms that's stacked and on the floor was all in the back of the van prior to me taking the pics of the stuff in the van...
hopefully you followed that explanation?
i do plan to take all that stuff out of the new card room though since it is AC'd and take a picture of the new blank canvas that was built to progress the organization and such
i'm a lil slow sometimes, well most times, dan and it took me an hour to say "hey, you should take a few pics and document this".
i'd have to wrap everything else up and bury it for another 20 years before i got a chance at something else of this caliber again....
Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

<< <i>Looks like you mowed a lot of lawns, worked a lot of odd jobs, and shoveled quite a bit of snow as a youngster! That sure looks like it would be so much fun to go through. Enjoy going down memory lane! >>
sos,
i did. i was very entrepreneurial from a young age. sold magazine subscriptions, candy at school, mowed lawns during the summers and shoveled snow in the winters. but again don't count out about 10 - 13 years of christmases and birthdays. As and Bs didn't hurt either...
back to the find. decided to hit the first box that said "balls". she wasn't the first one pulled out, but i knew the shape of the holder as soon as my hand touched it...
i had to buy the card, but looks like i picked a nice centered version back then! dad bought the signature tickets and remember being nervous as all get out when i asked him "how's the golf game"....
this was probably 1986ish or 87. and surprised to see it in ball point pen vs a sharpie? anyone know when that came out or started being widely used?
fair warning, they aren't all like this, i can assure you. just wanted to start her off w/ one of my fondest memories....
The memories that come back will be amazing for you

MICK! Even as a youngster you were savvy enough to pick out a centered one to have signed. The story that goes with that one is pretty darn sweet too!
life is all about balance. ying and the yangs. negatives and positives. black and white. i mean, what use is the good guy w/o a that cool, kick-ass, black hat wearing bad guy?
with that being said, i’ve already realized that this journey will be a roller coaster of highs and lows. i don’t plan to just share the homeruns. i plan to share the no swing, right down the middle strike outs as well. Or better yet, the highest of highs along with the lowest of lows. we've started off w/ the mantle and figure it’s only fair and fitting to share a strikeout. case in point, my box of 92 bowmans. typical 90’s overproduced crap for sure. but there’s a catch. i was a huge sandman fan. and i wont say “day” but there wasn’t a month that went by that I didn’t think about if I had any mariano rookie cards buried somewhere in my collection. from what i recall he wasn’t necessarily a “hot rookie” back in 92 or so and his cards most likely went into my commons box. however, as time went on he certainly became one of the strongest closers out there. anyways, i lived in NYC for a spell (10 years ago or so) and had yankee season tickets. And if ya wanted to see him pitch, then ya had to wait. wait to the point, that they quit selling beer. wait to see if they had the lead and would even put him in. it was excruciating but it was a wildly bunch that stuck around and that moved their way down row by row to get better views after everyone else departed after the 7th inning....although for the record, i was more of a red sox fan or better yet...i was more of “the rivalry” kinda guy. Again, balance, as i mentioned above. i grew up military. moved every 4 years whether i liked it or not, so never really had a “home team”. to put in in simpler terms...i was a baseball fan. i rooted for the sox, the a’s, the cardinals (used to see spring training games in st. pete w/ my grandfather), etc. hell, when i was in BFE, or better known as fayetteville, nc...i rooted for the generals!
getting back to the find…well i open up another box of cards and there they are. my 92 bowmans, just how i left them. i go to pull a stack out and knew instantly that something wasn’t right. i tried to pull out 10 or so cards basically to give me some good finger and thumb room so that i could grab ahold of a nice fat stack to sort through and make my "pull". well, that happened, sort of. the entire box is completely stuck together in brick-like fashion! ironically enough a gold foiled bonds, of all people, was starring back at me. i knew instantly that my dreams of finding or pulling a nice sandman rook outta my own collection were flushed down the proverbial pipe….i'm sure there's one stuck in there some where and we'll just have to see how nice she ends up. my pristine copy just wasn't in the cards, literally..."and that's ok" as stuart smalley would say.
i am gonna try a dry run on the “overnight freezer method” and see if that helps, but if anyone has any suggestions or even “don’t you dares”, please feel free to fire away…
without further ado...
I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball
<< <i>as we are waiting the 92 debacle, stumbled across one of my highly coveted boxes and binders...sure a few of you out there will remember the ol topps binder! pulled out a few cards and made a nice lil medely puzzle or "where's waldo?" montage for yall. again, none of these are gem mints, so please don't fret. i have a ton of card savers and will upload a few scans of the cards themselves when i get a sec, but for now...enjoy! >>
Looks like a nice high after the 92B low I see a lot of cards I would have loved to have had in any condition as a kid.

Touché!
<< <i>don't get me wrong, the card is beat to hell and back, but ya can't go wrong at .10!! >>
If you ever want to double your money on that one, let me know
On the 92s...you might try taking 1" stacks and giving them a light flex vertically and horizontally. You'll hear a little cracking from the cards releasing into smaller stacks and I keep doing the light flex on each stack. Many may have transfer marks from the card in front or behind, but some will escape, and maybe just maybe it'll be Mo.
I had similar issue with some Stadium Clubs and 94 Playoff FB.
Good luck.

hey, thanks jim!
it seems this has happened to just about any of the glossy cards that have sat for years...will certainly give your method a try because as of now, it's taking a solid 30 mins to just get thru a stack of 50 or so....

ta-dah!
my new favorite card for the time being!!!!
"tuck you in, warm within
keep you free from sin
till the sandman he comes"
here's another 90's gem. looks like i even kept the UD employees note card as it's not an insert, it's actually stickered to the card saver...
<< <i>No 90s childhood collection is complete without the polybagged Death of Superman comic! Still have mine back at home! >>
So do I.
I remember seeing an ad at a show to get Mantle's auto - $7 per around '87?
I went to a show at the Nassau Coliseum in '93 - I believe it was about 60 bucks and they were all sold out - I was very disappointed.

i believe in 87 (the 58 card and ball) it was $20. however, pretty sure that one was from a card show in charlotte, nc and not sure if it was the national, but it was a gigantic card show for me. I remember being blown away from mere size and magnitude of dealers and just the tables upon tables of dreams. when we left I was so exhausted, but still had to be dragged out...
and was just scanning these 91 ticket stubs...don't remember where this one was, gonna do a lil research w/ the radio station, but on the back of these tickets it has "$75 paid" stamped. however, looks like that was also just before festivus, so mighta been a lil holiday tax applied.
so quite a big jump in 4-5 years and the $7 probably was about right around that time.
<< <i>and thanks, jim! freezer run didn't present any negative or bad results, however your small stack, light flex tip worked pretty good!
ta-dah!
my new favorite card for the time being!!!!

This makes me happy. Glad it worked for you!
Are you going to sub some of these favorites just to get them slabbed?
