You almost make it sound like this is a regularly scheduled TV program, like the Saturday morning cartoons. It's sad that there is so much of this stuff out there to entrap the novice collector. The amazing thing is that it keeps cropping up on eBay so often. Enough of this stuff must get through to the intended customers to make posted this junk worthwhile.

Thanks for pointing these things out to us.

It's a thankless job Bill, I do it because I can't sit idle and let these listings run their course. The only way to end counterfeit listings is multiple reports.
Ebay has told me over n over that I'm not an expert but appreciates my concern and will investigate each report. Ebay also told me to not contact sellers
in regards to a coins authenticity, I'm not qualified to do so.

Ebay's responses to you show that they have not advanced very much from the time when they didn't give a darn if the coins their sellers posted were genuine or not. If they get enough negative comments they will pull something. Otherwise it's "Let the buyer beware" and they get to collect their commissions and fees.

I love the listing for the 1796 dollar. The totally out-of-focus shot of the edge appears to show reeding, not the lettered
edge that would appear on a genuine coin. Reported.

It is so sad to see what ebay has become (in numismatics anyway).... I often wonder if all the collectible fields on ebay are as filled with counterfeits and scams... Cheers, RickO

Life in the brick n moider (jersey slang) has presented me a few.
Disgusting things, but I keep a few around to "teach" and show, and tell. I just puked a little bit in my mouth knowing how many are permeating our hobby.

it is a regularly scheduled program

I'm sure fakes could be found on ebay on a daily basis if one were to only examine enough listings. There is a member here who used to find more daily and report them, but not post them here.

I had an interesting conversation with a German numismatist at Summer Seminar last week. Apparently, if you think eBay is bad, you should see the stuff that ends up on eBay.de. He says that it's much worse and eBay.com is actually a pretty good place to buy and sell stuff in comparison.

Nevertheless, in the spirit of Saturday Morning Counterfeits, I'll sit here with a bowl of cereal and drop anvils on the auctions in the OP.

Darn,I guess i better retract my bid on that 1796. I thought it was the elusive and rare reeded edge variety. Even Eliasberg did not have one!!! image
For real thought, look at all the shill bids that have bid these up, eBay police, where art though?

For some odd reason, that made me crack up image Keep dropping those anvils MD.

EDIT: I've gone against what Ebay has told me, I contacted the sellers and invited them here to state their case, prove me wrong image
One more seller complaint and supposedly I'll be banned from Ebay, whatever. According to Ebay, contacting sellers about the authenticity
of a coin is not permitted.

I guess eBay doesn't care if it's counterfeit or not so long as everyone keeps quiet about it. The situation will not get better so long people continue to support the criminal element that repeatedly offers counterfiets for sale on eBay.

as well, $20- $100 in the usa is ok but in some parts of the world, a months salary and a little financial independence.

a while back when i turned it up a few notches on tracking ebay accounts with fakes, i was doing cross-referencing analysis and ended up on foreign ebay sites

and was told point blank on the phone with a rep., most foreign ebay sites are NOT reportable for fakes. end of story and i literally almost vomited from the

    That's BS

No copies/repros is a company wide policy.

Even via a foreign sign in on a non .com site you will find
    1) either a foreign page stating the prohibition or a redirect to the .com page
    2) a report link with the ability to report the item as a repro

it is possible that their official position on copies etc, the statement they released (1-2 years ago?) was after the date(s) that i was doing this. i would need exact dates to narrow it down but im not dedicated enough at this point as it is moot since the policies are in place now.

since the hidden names AND item numbers/links implementation a few months? back was implemented as well as their official statement about disbanding their reporting dept., i significantly reduced my efforts along with their changing of image names to be nearly identical. the effort required to stay ahead simply wore me down.

90% of my protocols were circumnavigated with their various updates over a 2-4 year period. still have a couple good methods but they aren't really efficient.
