Actual grade revealed: If I told you this coin returned as a VF20...

After having viewed this coin in hand, I was more confident in some about the grading possibilities. Though, I did expect a VF20 at least, I'm not terribly disappointed.

Final vote before the reveal:

If this coin returned as a PCGS VF20, how would you feel?

    I personally would've given it a 25.

Netted due to borderline environmental issues IMHO.

Edit to add: didn't vote because no answer seemed appropriate due to my opinion.

I would be happy if that straight-graded at VF-20.

I would feel very fine about counting my blessings. All 20 of them, numerically and numismatically speaking, that is. And to be quite frank, I dont think I would have even submitted it.

A coin I would pass on. Not VF and has surface and rim problems.

Probably graded down for stated issues. Unless it is a tuff variety I would pass and get a nicer one.

I'd have been pleasantly surprised with a VF20 grade.

Detail is VF and if it did straight grade I would expect it to be netted to Fine.

Netted down to 20 seems ok, but I'd sell that coin as soon as it came back.

I think the VF is about right. Some things say 20, others say 25 to me. It has lots of issues but nothing I see is so bad that it gets bagged.

Ain't that like the tail wagging the dog ? I think it has obvious ED, and I don't mean the kind that can be fixed with a pill.

I disagree. I doubt the graders were even aware it was a rare variety, unless by chance one of them is also an expert on Bust halves.

The coin has env. damage, plain and simple. The graders were gracious enough to net grade it at F+ instead of giving it no grade at all. If I were the OP, I'd be elated that the coin even received a numeric grade.

I went with "slightly overgraded" but think it's a cool CircCam.

  • It looks VF, and if it had fewer marks It may have gone higher than 20. But I think the grade is OK

It's corroded silver. Back in the day when I was getting my collection graded, that would have come back in a body bag.

This is an example of the dumbing down of grading standards.

I'm actually OK with the grade, for a change. It's a 20, no better, no worse.

I think you were fortunate if indeed you got a straight VF20 out of the grading service. I would've submitted it, as well. Worth the shot for a tough R5+ coin. Nice find!

  • In an F15 holder the coin is worth between 1K and 2K.

Really? I was thinking more like $900 tops. Please PM me image

F15 was exactly what I was thinkin', which is why I said "slightly overgraded" at VF20.

I could've seen it "just squeak by" as a 20 without being surprised, but I think F15 is right on the money.

And despite what some called "environmental damage" or "corrosion" on the surfaces, I like the look of it, as previously mentioned.

I've seen worse coins than this in 20 holders so I'm surprised our host didn't VF this piece.
