I'm looking forward to the rip threads this will generate image

I'd think keep it sealed. That's roughly $90 a rack you paid. These racks normally go for about $45 each right?

    Congratulations on winning the case!

Brent also sold a lot of 5 1980 racks for $455 dlvd. Though that was a strong price, 1980 racks seem to command about $60-$65 a rack now. There is a lot of 24 1980 racks up now on ebay at over $1,500.

If I know Chris, he is going to rip that sucker, LOL..

Hopefully, a rack with Henderson RC on top lurks inside!

I'm thinking of keeping the box with Hendu top sealed. But definitely ripping the other two.

That's assuming you find absolutely no racks with HOFers on top. A Henderson showing would sell for about $250-275. Not counting the possibilities of multiple Rickeys and other HOFers that would be gradeable.

There are also racks that are supposed to have Rose, Ryan etc. showing on top. I will probably keep those sealed as well.

Chris, how do you know this if case is sealed?

NM: I thought case was sealed.

  • Wow I can't believe people pay so much for 1980s racks. I guess things have really changed in the past few years.

At $60 a rack that's already amazing. I guess the extra $30 each is for the FASC premium?
  • NikklosNikklos Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭
Well they're not marked FASC and there's no mention of it in the description so I didn't assume it was. I just wanted A LOT of RACKS all at once!

But if the star racks carry a premium (especially the Hendu top) then it makes up a little ground. There are a bunch.

  • Sorry, just realized this case was assembled and is not factory sealed.

I hope it turns out to be a great case but I would be very careful if ripping anything in it. Someone may have used a few big name racks to lure someone into buying a case full of duds. I hope that's not the case but I believe racks can be thumbed through to see what the cards are like beneath.

    Hope I'm wrong here!

Anyone (Grote) know the price relationship between a case (with how many racks?) and a wax box? I see the wax boxes price rose to around $1100 a box then down to around 750-800 a box recently.
Kind of a per card basis? I don't know how many racks in a case or now many cards in a rack. Or else Id do the math.

    Congrats on the case!

Card countwise, there are 540 cards in a wax box (36 packs x 15 cards per pack) vs 1,044 cards in a rack case (24 racks x 42 cards per rack).

Not sure about the price relationship, but it should be 72 racks in that case w/42 cards each.

That's 1044/rack box, correct? w/3 boxes in the case?

Yes. Rack cases came in two versions-3 box cases (more common) and 6 box cases. A wax case contains 20 wax boxes.

ETA: Meant to type 1,044 cards in a rack "box" above, not case.

Understood. Are you weary of racks being searched if they're not FASC, or is that not really much of an issue for the 1980s?

damn grote...ha..youre awesome....just took the dog out and was doing the numbers in my head....came back (7 minutes later) to edit my post and say i figured it out (wasn't clear on how many boxes per case etc...always seems to change)....and of course grote had posted the answer.....thanks...still laughing.

While we're on the topic, I am not all that caught up on the FASC business. Some of the worst garbage I've ever ripped has been FASC and its uniformly garbage throughout the entire box in those cases.

Based on the past "adventures" you have been sharing with us here on the board
my bet is you get the itch and start ripping before the end of September.

    As always, enjoy it.

Very cool pick-up. 1980 rack boxes/cases seem pretty difficult to come by relative to their wax and cello counterparts.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

My racks are apparently making a cross-country road trip from Oregon to Miami via FedEx Ground. Oh my god, I can't take the wait anymore!

I thought such trips happened only for USPS, lol..

Hope you get them in soon, Chris!

This is true, but I think the 100% certainty that the packs haven't been thumbed through is what gives factory sealed cases the premiums they realize.

So if a hand collated 1980 topps baseball rack case goes for $6,803.21, how much would a factory sealed one command? $8,000+?

Can't wait to see this unfold. I'm interested in a few rack packs if you want to unload any to fellow rippers. image
