Post a coin that you paid a big eye appeal premium for

Post a coin that you paid (and would pay again) a +50% premium to the average example for. Call it the eye appeal premium.

Paid a 100% premium to grade and guides

Paid a 200% premium for the nicest VF Barber half ever
imageimage

75% premium for this ridiculously toned half eagle which rumor has it came from the cornerstone of a church in the south.

50% premium for likely the nicest 1844 AU $2.5 around (a very rare date)

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That 55-D G$1 is a very tough coin! With the originality and full reverse details it is even more elusive.

  • This one. It's shown in a scan and I need to get photos of it. It's an even, dark pewter color that is crisper in the denticles than the scan shows. Now, though, PCGS price guide has almost caught up with it.image

When I bought it in 2009 it was a big premium but the market since has caught up.

It was crossed by another member from a old ANACS MS62 holder into PCGS MS63...

I've seen enough MS64-66's yet never saw a upgrade candidate.

PCGS PR65, but cost me 66 money. Regret it in retrospect. No reason to pay a big premium for anything in the current market unless you collect big-ticket items and you're bidding against the other whales.

one of the best parts of specializing in one series (capped bust half dimes) is that any time I stray outside that series, I tend to buy only those coins that REALLY appeal to me. And when I do, I have little knowledge of what an expert in that series might pay for the coin. I recently bought this and paid what was asked.

Front-facing coins were extremely difficult to engrave for the ancient celators and they rarely did a good job. This coin is unique, the finest of the overall type, among the nicest of all front facing portraits on ancient coins, and with a world-class pedigree to boot. The reverse is also nothing to sneeze at, with a lifelike depiction of a swan. I definitely paid a premium for it but am not looking back as it is utterly irreplaceable:

Now THAT is a gorgeous circulated coin! Love the originality!
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

Jeez -- I don't know if I would regret this purchase, Rhedden. It is a spectacular coin.

There are some truly fantastic coins shown in this thread, BTW!
